Safety Technician

The Safety Technician serves in DDOT’s Roadway Operations and Safety Division, School Crossing Guard Branch, and plays a key role in protecting students and community members as they travel to and from school. Safety Technicians guide children across busy intersections, manage pedestrian and vehicle movement during school arrival and dismissal, and maintain a steady, reliable presence that families can count on. This part‑time position requires working both morning and afternoon shifts and being outdoors in all weather. DDOT provides training and protective clothing.

This role requires strong situational awareness, clear and respectful communication with children, families, and school staff, and the ability to remain calm and confident in busy or stressful conditions. Successful candidates are dependable, attentive, and committed to promoting safe travel around schools. When needed, Safety Technicians may also assist with traffic control during special events.

Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent is responsible for the flow of traffic to assist and protect children and pedestrians in safely crossing streets at intersections to which they are assigned. Rotates to various intersections within assigned Wards located in the District of Columbia. Reports to the proper police authority or other designated official any violation of traffic laws. Informs motorists through appropriate hand signals that school children are about to use the crossing and have the right of way.

Qualifications and Education

Specialized Experience: Experience that equips the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA’s) to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level and a High School Diploma or its equivalent.

Working Conditions/Environment

The work involves regular and recurring exposure to all types of weather conditions. Harsh weather conditions may cause problems with visibility. Employee’s exposure to harsh and unpleasant weather conditions necessitates the use of protective clothing.

Position Designation: The position has been deemed safety-sensitive, pursuant to section 410 of Chapter 4 of the D.C. Personnel Regulations. Accordingly, the incumbent will be subject to criminal background check; traffic record check (as applicable); pre-employment drug and alcohol test; reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol test; post-accident or incident drug and alcohol test; random drug and alcohol test; and return-to-duty or follow-up drug and alcohol test.

Essential Designation: This position is classified as an essential position under the provisions of the District Personnel Manual Chapter 12. As such, the incumbent is required to serve in emergency situations to perform critical duties, i.e., snow removal, debris removal, transportation, shelter, operations, food distribution, and communications. These duties may be performed when the government is closed or when employees are dismissed early.

Applicants claiming “Residency Preference” will be required to maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of employment.
