POSITION TITLE: Assistant Director of Transportation
SCHOOL/DIVISION: Facilities, Maintenance, & Transportation
LOCATION: Central Services Building located at 2222-C South Fayetteville Street, Asheboro, N.C. 27205 PAY GRADE: Assistant Director Level
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation
SUPERVISES: Transportation Department staff members as assigned by the Director of the Transportation Department WORK WEEK SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday
WORK HOURS: Regular business hours; some possible evening and weekend hours
NUMBER OF MONTHS PER YEAR: 12
POSITION PURPOSE
The person in this position will be responsible for providing leadership support for the Director of the school system’s Transportation Department. Also, the person in this position will be expected to lead the school system’s Transportation Department in the absence of the Director of the school system’s Transportation Department.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of employment information
- Ability to maintain professional and emotional control under stress
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, including preparing reports and making formal oral presentations
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school personnel and parents/members of the public • Effective leadership and team building skills
- Ability to work well within a team environment that values an open exchange of ideas
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma
- Three (3) years of leadership experience
- Three (3) years of managerial experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Prior work experience in a Transportation Department of a school system
- Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory transportation requirements for public schools • Knowledge of Randolph County School System (RCSS) policies and procedures
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist the Director of the Transportation Department as needed
- Handle the day-to day supervision of assigned staff members including scheduling, work assignments, assessment of work performance, and the provision of assistance/support
- Collaborate with other staff members in order to formulate and implement policies, procedures, goals, and objectives for the Transportation Department
- Ensure the Transportation Department’s operations are supportive of the instructional goals of the school system • Facilitate effective communication with parents, staff members of the Transportation Department, and school personnel • Resolve conflicts with administrators, teachers, staff members, and parents
- Establish effective relationships with central service administrators, principals, parents, and members of the public • Implement and direct training programs for drivers
- Participate in the investigations of school system vehicle accidents and prepare accident reports • Promote the use of TIMS to effectively and efficiently design and implement bus routes and schedules
- Direct processes to communicate routes with drivers
- Assist in planning attendance zones and transportation routes for new schools
- Maintain security on all driver records
- Coordinate with principals concerning driver performance
- Assist in the daily operations of the Transportation Department in the areas of safety, efficiency, and financial management
- Assist in the preparation of all local, state, and federal documentation as needed
- Attend meetings of the Board of Education as needed
- Perform other related duties as assigned
