JOB DESCRIPTION: Project Transition Special Education Paraprofessional

POSITION SUMMARY:

  • The Project Transition Special Education Paraprofessional is responsible for providing support to students with significant disabilities as they prepare for life beyond school. This position assists students in developing workplace, social, and independent living skills by supporting them in classroom, community, and job site settings. The paraprofessional works under the direction of certified staff to promote student growth, independence, and successful transition from school to the workforce.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Project Transition Special Education Paraprofessional: 

  1. Assist students with academic, social, and behavioral skill development under the direction of certified staff. *
  2. Supports students in practicing workplace, communication, and daily living skills in classroom, community, and job site settings. *
  3. Provides support for the physical needs of students with disabilities, including toileting, feeding, lifting, transferring, mobility assistance, and personal hygiene, in accordance with individual care plans and safety protocols. *
  4. Accompanies and assists students on community outings, ensuring safety, appropriate behavior, and engagement in learning experiences. *
  5. Assists students in transitioning from school to the workforce by reinforcing employment-related skills, promoting independence, and encouraging self-advocacy. *
  6. Supports students on job sites by modeling appropriate workplace behavior, reinforcing job skills, and facilitating communication with supervisors or co-workers. *
  7. Attends meetings and in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions. *
  8. Communicates with supervising instructional staff and professional support personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and implementing IEP objectives. *
  9. Maintains a variety of materials (e.g. instructional materials, files, records, charts, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items, providing written reference, and meeting mandated requirements. *
  10. Manages a variety of assigned activities for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment. *
  11. Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive school environment. *
  12. Participates in the implementation of IEP goals for the purpose of meeting IEP goals and district benchmarks. *
  13. Provides instruction to students in a variety of individual and group activities (e.g. academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, etc.) for the purpose of reinforcing instructional objectives; implementing IEP plans, and ensuring students success in school all under the supervision of assigned teacher. *
  14. Provides adapted classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives. *
  15. Provides feedback of observations for the purpose of informing teachers and administrators of student progress. *
  16. Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources for the purpose of solving problems, providing information, and directing to other sources. *
  17. Follows the policies and procedures of the school and the District. *
  18. Demonstrates a sense of professional responsibility, such as demonstrating ethical behavior; providing accurate data and reports when needed; meeting deadlines; maintaining confidentiality; caring for the equipment and materials; and dressing appropriately and presenting a good role model. *
  19. Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to use effective communication skills; ability to use time effectively; good organizational skills; ability to maintain a positive relationship with other staff by collaborating and working cooperatively with them (including supervisors); ability to operate standard office equipment and software applications; ability to prepare and maintain accurate records; knowledge of instructional techniques; knowledge of safety practices and procedures; knowledge of conflict resolution; knowledge of child development/behavior; ability to maintain a clam demeanor; ability to maintain confidentiality; and ability to meet deadlines and schedules.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:

Mandatory:                 Minimum of high school education or GED.

 

Preferred:                   1 years of experience working in a school is preferred.

-                Upper Body Mobility: use hands and fingers to feel, grasp, and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers, twist and bend at the wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; turn, raise, and lower the head.

-                Strength: to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects which weigh as much as 40 or more pounds on a frequent basis.

-                Environmental Requirements: encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work independently; work outdoors and indoors.

-                Mental Requirements: read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copy, compare, compile, and coordinate information and records.

-                Additional Work Conditions and Physical Abilities: Requires travel to multiple sites.

EVALUATION

-       Evaluation of this position shall be by the Chief Student Advocacy Officer.
