What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head Custodian - NYS HELPS - Transit Middle position at Transit Middle School?
The NYS HELPS (Hiring for Emergency Limited placement Program Statewide) is a NYS program that allows civil service agencies to hire qualified permanent employees quickly and without requiring them to take a competitive civil service exam. It was created to help agencies fill critical vacancies by streamlining the appointment process, though candidates must still meet all other minimum qualifications for the job.
40 hours per week
Initial hours of assignment: Mon-Fri: 6:30am - 3:00pm
12 months per school year
Duties:
Responsible for scheduling, supervising, evaluating employees.
Participate in cleaning and maintenance activities.
Building inspections.
Qualifications:
- Graduation from High School or Vocational school or possession of a High School equivalency diploma and three (3) years experience in commercial cleaning practices or general building maintenance, which includes experience in the Carpentry, Electrical, HV & AC Systems and Plumbing trades, one (1) year of which was in a responsible supervisory capacity; OR
- Seven (7) years of experience in commercial cleaning practices or general building maintenance, which includes experience in the Carpentry, Electrical, HV & AC Systems and Plumbing trades, one (1) year of which was in a responsible supervisory capacity; OR
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B). AND
- Possession of a valid Class 5 New York State driver's license at the time of appointment.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
Special Requirements:
~Knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment.
~Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of boiler equipment.
~Knowledge of tools, terminology and practices of skilled trades.
~Knowledge of ground maintenance.
~Ability to plan and supervise the work of custodial, cleaning and maintenance personnel
~Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
~Ability to deal with school and civic groups in a courteous and tactful manner
~Dependability, thoroughness, physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
~Valid Class 5 New York State Driver's License.
