The project aims to support LGBTQ asylum seekers at the US-Mexico border with legal, humanitarian, post-detention, and organizing support.About the PositionThe Director of Case Management will lead and expand the Border Butterflies Projects case management program, ensuring that LGBTQ asylum seekers across the United States and at the southern border receive effective, coordinated, and compassionate support. This role requires both strategic program development and hands-on case management.With 300 active participantsranging from light-touch support to intensive wraparound servicesthe Director will oversee a team of staff while also taking on cases directly, particularly when triage is needed or gaps arise. The ideal candidate is a trauma-informed leader who can balance staff supervision, burnout prevention, and boundary-setting with a deep commitment to participant care. The Director will design and implement strategies to scale services, improve risk assessment and harm reduction practices, and ensure responsive, participant-centered support.Key ResponsibilitiesProgram Leadership & DevelopmentBuild and expand the case management program to meet the evolving needs of LGBTQ asylum seekers across the United States and at the Southern border in Tijuana.Design systems for triage, risk assessment, and harm reduction to prioritize and respond to acute and ongoing participant needs.Develop and implement strategies for scaling services and improving wraparound care.Staff Supervision & SupportWork with staff and volunteers to triage urgent participant needs, identify priorities, and coordinate timely responses.Oversee staff caseloads to model best practices and remain grounded in service delivery.Supervise, train, and mentor case management staff, ensuring high-quality, trauma-informed service delivery.Support staff in maintaining healthy boundaries and adopting burnout-prevention practices.Foster a collaborative, compassionate, and accountable team culture.Provide direct case management support when staff capacity is exceeded or in complex cases.Partnerships & Community RelationshipsCultivate and strengthen relationships with organizations across the country to connect participants to essential resources, including housing, food, healthcare, and legal services.Serve as a key liaison between the Border Butterflies Project and external service providers.Trauma-Informed PracticeIntegrate trauma-informed care principles into all aspects of case management and staff supervision.Implement organizational practices that prioritize participant dignity, agency, and safety.Model and implement resilience and sustainability strategies for staff working with high-need populations.Qualifications & RequirementsPrevious ExperienceMinimum 57 years of experience in case management, social work, or related field, including direct service with LGBTQ and/or migrant communities.At least 3 years of supervisory or program leadership experience, ideally in a nonprofit or community-based setting.Masters of Social Work required.Core Skills & CompetenciesProven ability to design, scale, and implement case management programs in dynamic, high-need contexts.Demonstrated expertise in trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and risk assessment.Skilled in triage and prioritization, with capacity to manage multiple requests under pressure.Excellent relationship-building skills with diverse organizations and service providers nationwide.Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to balance big-picture strategy and hands-on service delivery.Must be fluent in Spanish and English. Fluency in other languages a strong plus.Leadership & ValuesCommitment to mentoring and supporting staff through boundary-setting and burnout prevention strategies.Ability to foster a collaborative, accountable, and compassionate team culture.Flexible and adaptive leadership style, willing to step in with direct case management when needed.Deep understanding of intersecting oppressions including anti-Blackness, white supremacy, transphobia, ableism, misogyny, colonialism, and capitalism.Demonstrated capacity to provide a welcoming presence to clients experiencing trauma, and a demonstrated client-centered, trauma-informed perspective and cultural responsibility to the diverse populations we serve.
