Summary: The Staff Accountant assists in planning and organizing accounting/finance activities within the accounting department of Trans-Ocean Products (TOP) by performing the following essential duties and responsibilities:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Cash Management:
- Collaborate with Accounts Payable, Payroll, and the Accounting Manager to anticipate upcoming cash requirements.
- Execute internal and external fund transfers, including loan draws, repayments, and intercompany transactions.
Accounting:
- Performs various month-end accounting functions as requested by the Accounting Manager.
- Processes monthly broker commissions payments and supporting reports.
- Prepares and enters assigned monthly journal entries.
- Reconciles assigned general ledger accounts.
- Assists in maintaining general ledger and subsidiary ledgers for Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Fixed Assets, Inventories and SGA expenses.
- Able to fill in for Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and other Accounting roles as needed.
Audits & Compliance:
- Responsible for working with external auditors on the annual financial audit, JSox audit, and conducting ad-hoc internal audits to ensure compliance with accounting policies, procedures, and administrative controls.
Reporting:
- Complete regular reports as needed, such as monthly labor metrics report, quarterly MSC report, quarterly consolidation report, etc.
- Support leadership team, sales and operations by responding to requests for special analysis and ad hoc reports.
Taxes:
- Assist with TOP’s state tax filings, state registrations, payments, and correspondence. Work with outside CPA firm to ensure state income tax deadlines are met, and information filed with agencies is accurate.
- Calculate, accrue, file, and pay WA state and City of Bellingham B&O taxes.
- Accrue and track other taxes as needed.

Qualifications:Education and Experience: Associates degree in accounting is required; a Bachelor’s degree is preferred. 3-5 years of accounting experience required (preferably in the manufacturing and/or seafood sector).
Computer Skills: Experience with core Accounting systems required. Proficiency with an ERP system is preferred, with an emphasis on Sage software products.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook & Access). Experience with Financial reporting software, Fixed Asset software, and business intelligence software is desired.
