Trails Park and Recreation District helps bring recreation, wellness, and connection to residents in the eastern Centennial area. We operate and maintain several parks, trails, open spaces, and facilities all designed to create places where people can get outside, be active, and spend time together. We also offer a wide range of programs for all ages, including youth sports, summer camps, fitness classes, community events, and activities for active aging.

SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Cultural Arts Supervisor, the Pottery Instructor is responsible for instruction of the adult and youth pottery and clay arts classes for the Trails Recreation Center and creating an open and positive environment that allows for creative expression that enhances the customer service experience for all patrons.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Effectively teach pottery skills in a positive, customer service oriented and creative manner.
  • Ensure class participants are properly registered for courses and challenged within their skill level to produce positive improvement.
  • Assist in the development of pottery programs, including but not limited to policies and procedures, class standards, lesson plans, and creation of new cutting-edge pottery courses in keeping with the Trails Recreation Center mission and vision.
  • Effective communication of any issues or concerns that arise within the pottery program.
  • Can accommodate participants of a lower skill level in order to teach effectively for all participants.
  • Responsible for loading and unloading of kilns.
  • Must have a working knowledge of how to mix glazes, how to use a pugger, and how to use a slab roller.
  • Arrives on time for all shifts including 15 minute preparation time before all classes.
  • Promotes positive customer relations with all Trails Recreation Center patrons.
  • Works directly or indirectly with all TPRD employees in a positive and constructive manner to solve facility and program concerns through communication and effective listening.
  • Establishes and maintains a working environment conducive to positive morale, individual style, quality, creativity and teamwork.
  • Inspects and maintains cleanliness, safety, and general appearance of the facility, including but not limited to, the pottery studio and the proper storage of any and all equipment used.
  • Participation in all mandatory meetings and trainings, including but not limited to emergency procedure trainings, customer service trainings, skill enhancement, and in-service trainings. Trainings may be online or in-person.
  • Assist with periodic reports as needed including accident reports, monthly reports, attendance reports, customer comment logs, and participant progression reports.
  • Promote various TPRD recreation sponsored programs through classes.
  • Assist with the execution of the Customer Service Program.
  • Must maintain a positive and friendly attitude while engaged in stressful and/or controversial situations with patrons and co-workers.
  • Establishes and maintains a working environment conducive to positive morale, individual style, quality, creativity and teamwork
  • Complies with District rules and regulations and policies and procedures
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Cultural and Leisure Program Supervisor

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Strong customer service, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally with customers and employees of TPRD.
  • Ability to effectively teach by demonstration, explanation, and positive critiques.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to stand, reach, climb, stoop, or kneel.
  • Ability to talk to and/or hear patrons, managers, or groups of people.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and transport necessary equipment, including benches, tables, and chairs or other objects up to 50 lbs assisted.
  • Ability to see objects closely and at a distance.
  • Ability to deal with moderate to high stress situations at times and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education in ceramics, sculpture, and clay arts techniques or a related field.
  • One year related instructional experience and/or training.
  • Equivalent combination of education or experience will be considered.
