Position Summary
The Senior Website Designer/Project Manager leads the design, development, publishing, and maintenance of NSF.gov and the NSF Employee Portal. This role supports the NSF Web Team by managing web requests, creating content within Drupal, and ensuring that all digital experiences meet federal accessibility, usability, and plain‑language requirements. The Senior Website Designer/Project Manager provides expert guidance on web design best practices, collaborates with NSF staff across directorates, and ensures that all digital products adhere to the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS), Section 508, and NSF branding guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
Web Design & Development
- Design and build webpages using Drupal components and Layout Builder.
- Create clear, compelling page layouts aligned with USWDS, WCAG/Section 508, and federal plain‑language standards.
- Format and upload PDFs, images, and documents; ensure optimized display and accessibility.
Content Publishing & Support
- Respond to publishing requests to post news, events, funding documents, and internal portal content.
- Use ServiceNow and Microsoft Lists to track, prioritize, and complete web-related tickets.
- Provide high‑quality support for staff across NSF, advising on design, accessibility, and best practices.
User Experience & Standards Enforcement
- Ensure all webpages meet accessibility (508), SEO, and usability standards.
- Recommend effective use of imagery, layout, and interactive elements.
- Collaborate with federal agencies, academia, and industry partners when supporting joint outreach.
Technical & Team Leadership
- Apply expert‑level skills in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Lead small teams performing web development tasks.
- Participate in special projects and support digital transformation initiatives.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or related discipline.
- 5 years of professional, expert‑level experience in web design and development.
- Expertise in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Adobe Creative Cloud.
- Minimum 3 years of experience working within a Drupal environment.
- Familiarity with U.S. Web Design System (USWDS).
- Experience using ServiceNow or similar ticketing systems.
- Knowledge of Section 508 accessibility standards.
- Experience supporting federal agency web operations.
Preferred
- Experience with SEO strategy and implementation.
- Experience collaborating with academic and federal stakeholders.
