CAD Designer / Pipeline Drafting Technician – Job Description
Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented CAD Designer / Pipeline Drafting Technician to support gas distribution and pipeline infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate will prepare piping, mechanical fabrication, and civil site drawings while assisting engineering and construction teams with facility data, drafting support, and project coordination.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare simple to intermediate-level piping and mechanical fabrication drawings.
- Develop civil site and grading plans, pipeline alignment sheets, and profile drawings for gas distribution projects including gate stations, meter and regulator stations, and related pipeline appurtenances.
- Coordinate assigned drafting and design projects, including drawing reviews and status reporting.
- Assist internal and external stakeholders by providing facility drawings, pipeline information, and technical documentation.
- Conduct facility data research for modifications to existing gas facilities.
- Provide mapping and gas facility information to engineering, construction, and operations personnel.
- Support external customers such as engineering consultants, Blue Stakes, and government agencies with facility information requests.
- Work under the guidance of supervisors and senior designers while exercising initiative and independent judgment on drafting assignments.
- Maintain accurate project documentation and drawing records.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Work Conditions
- May require overtime, weekend, and holiday work to meet project deadlines.
- Extensive use of computer-aided design and drafting systems.
- Travel to field locations and company facilities, including occasional overnight stays.
- Outdoor work in varying weather conditions including hot, cold, wet, and dry environments.
- Ability to walk on steep, uneven, or ungraded terrain.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of
- Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) software and drafting principles.
- Reading and interpreting facility drawings, alignment sheets, and construction plans.
- Standard drafting practices, terminology, and design procedures.
- Property rights-of-way, surveying principles, and basic mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in:
- AutoCAD
- AutoCAD Plant 3D
- AutoCAD Civil 3D
- Vehicle Tracking
- Autodesk Vault
- Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Adobe Acrobat Pro
- Experience with CADWorx P&ID is considered an advantage.
Ability to
- Read and interpret gas distribution facility drawings and alignment sheets.
- Understand basic Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) used in construction drawing packages.
- Interpret field notes, surveys, and as-built documentation.
- Follow written and verbal instructions effectively.
- Work independently with minimal supervision while meeting project deadlines.
- Maintain strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy in drafting and design work.
- Contribute positively to a professional and collaborative work environment.
Requirements
- Associate degree or certificate in Computer-Aided Design and Drafting from an accredited institution, or equivalent professional experience.
- 0–2 years of professional drafting/design experience.
- Entry-level proficiency in design and drafting with the ability to complete assignments within established timelines.
