What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Assistant position at TownWell Veterinary Clinic?
Overview
TownWell Veterinary Clinic is a full service clinic providing care to a variety of animals, including dogs, cats, exotics, small ruminants, and show 4-H/FFA animals. We will not be seeing horses or cattle. No weekend hours, occasional emergencies after hours is optional for additional pay. We have a special focus on canine reproduction, as well as small ruminant and backyard flock care.
We are only recently opened (March 16, 2026) but have been extremely busy and we are in need of additional assistants that are ready to grow into technician positions!
Duties
- Assist with animal restraint during examinations, treatments, and procedures safely
- Administer medications and vaccinations accurately following veterinary instructions and aseptic techniques
- Support animal husbandry tasks such as feeding, bathing, grooming, and cleaning kennels to maintain a healthy environment
- Handle various species including dogs, cats, exotics (including avian), and small ruminants with confidence and care, utilizing proper animal handling techniques
- Prepare animals for surgery or diagnostic procedures by collecting samples or setting up equipment in accordance with veterinary protocols
- Maintain detailed records of treatments, medication administration, and laboratory results
- Support front desk activities including scheduling appointments, managing client communications, and processing payments
- Assist with laboratory work such as blood and urine sample collection, processing tests, and recording results to aid diagnosis and treatment plans
- Practice veterinary terminology accurately to communicate effectively with team members and clients
- Ensure aseptic techniques are followed during procedures to prevent infection or contamination
- Contribute to laboratory experiments or diagnostic testing when required to support clinical decision-making
- Maintain cleanliness of the clinic environment including treatment areas, kennels, and surgical suites
Qualifications
- Previous kennel experience or animal husbandry background demonstrating familiarity with pet care routines
- Experience working as a veterinary technician or veterinary assistant in a clinical setting preferred
- Knowledge of veterinary terminology, animal anatomy, physiology, and critical care practices
- Skilled in animal restraint techniques for dogs, cats, and other species including exotics and small ruminants
- Ability to handle animals confidently during procedures such as catheterization or medication administration
- Strong understanding of aseptic techniques and laboratory procedures relevant to veterinary medicine
- Excellent animal handling skills with an emphasis on safety for both animals and staff
- Experience with front desk operations including client communication and appointment scheduling is a plus
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail
- Willingness to learn new skills related to veterinary critical care, pet care, and laboratory testing
- Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds as well as partake in farm calls as needed.

Pay: $14.00 - $20.00 per hour
