What are the responsibilities and job description for the Building Inspector position at Township of Montgomery?
We are currently hiring for a Building Inspector in our Code/Construction Department; who will be responsible for ensuring compliance with building codes and thorough inspections of work in progress. Full time hours are Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, Part time hours are Mon/Wed/Fri - 7:00 am - 3:30 pm. Starting salary $71,120 per year, $34.19 per hour. Salary dependent on experience and qualifications. EOE
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Site visits to inspect new construction and alterations to existing structures
- Perform Inspections to be sure of compliance to the UCC and the approved plans for the project at hand;
- Regularly exercises technical judgement and discretion in performance of duties;
- Works under the supervision and general direction of the Construction Official;
- Enforces the building laws, ordinances and codes relating to the construction of buildings within the Township;
- Confers with and advises co-workers and superiors on technical and administrative problems;
- Performs inspections as per applicable State of New Jersey laws, ordinances and codes;
- Reviews for code compliance and proper detail level;
- Inspects the construction site for Code compliance, take appropriate action when discovering a Code violation, maintains record of inspection results on technical sections, informs Technical Assistant when final Subcode approval is granted on a project;
- Writes clear, concise reports on plan review and inspection findings;
- Assists with phone and drop-in inquiries and inspection scheduling requests

Required Key Technical Skills and Knowledge:
- Knowledge of NJ – Uniform Construction Code construction practices.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of building enforcement
- Considerable responsible construction experience, combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skill and ability
- Ability to write clearly and concisely
- Ability to perform duties in a safe manner
- Extensive responsible construction experience

Required Education, Certification, License:
- Current building inspector license – RCS, ICS and HHS.
High school diploma or equivalent

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform 10-15 site inspections per day.
- Ability to climb ladders; comfortable with heights
- Vision and hearing adequate to perform essential job functions.
- Ability to speak clearly.
Additional Requirements:
- Effective 9/1/11, all employees of State and local government must reside in the State of NJ, unless exempted.
- Must have a valid NJ Driver’s License.
