Title: Youth Services Technician

Distinguishing Features of Work:

This is a part time position responsible for the development and implementation of a range of library services for children and tweens and for providing programming support for both groups.

Responsibilities include programming and outreach services for, provision of reference services and computer use guidance for young patrons and supervision of volunteer assistants for youth programs.

The Youth Services Technician works under the general guidance and supervision of the Library Director.

· This is a part-time position, working on average 20 hrs. a week.

· Some evening and weekend hours will be required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Programming

  • Development and implementation of a variety of innovative, regularly scheduled, and special event programming for both children, and tweens. This will include age-appropriate story hours, public school vacation programs, summer reading programs, and special evening and weekend programs. Programming may be in person or digital/online.
  • Sit on a library programming committee.
  • Work with Parks a& Recreation department and other town departments to support municipal event and programs.

Outreach

  • Serves as a liaison between the library and schools, caregivers, homeschoolers, and agencies serving children.
  • Conducts visits to the schools and other locations to promote library programs.
  • Promotes cooperation between the schools through the school librarians and teachers.

Circulation & Reference Services

  • Assists other staff with circulation
  • Provides informational services to library patrons, especially children and their parents.
  • Assists patrons as needed in computer use anddigital literacy with an emphasis on youth services.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency using personal computers, mobile devices, computer software, and the Internet is required.
  • Familiarity with video and audio editing and remote learning/conferencing and programming software.
  • Maintains and develops new professional skills and abilities by attending appropriate professional trainings and meetings whenever possible.
  • Willing to work Saturdays and some evenings.

Interpersonal/Public Relations

  • Greets and assists all library users.
  • Is responsive to comments, suggestions, and requests.
  • Interacts cooperatively and effectively with all library staff, has good sense of humor.
  • Communicates with staff, keeping them informed of the operations of children’s services and programs and digital literacy initiatives.
  • Seeks discussion with the library director regarding initiatives and general operations issues, communicating in writing when appropriate. Obtains approval from the director before implementing significant initiatives.
  • Effectively promotes children’s services including programming through the use of in-house and outside publicity.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Desirable Training and Experience:

  • Experience working in a library or educational setting, a bachelor’s degree, and experience with children, including demonstrated knowledge of current children’s and young adult education, literature, and programming.
  • Proficiency with technology.
  • A BA in education or Library science is desirable, but not required, or a combination of comparable education and experience which demonstrates the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Technician I

This is an entry level position and is the designation for new employees during their probationary period while they are in training. Once they have satisfactorily completed their probationary period, a Technician I will become a technician II. This can be a part-time or full-time position. Salary is based on experience.

Technician II

Technician II have successfully completed their probationary period and has successfully completed their basic training for the position. Technician IIs and are responsible for the duties outlined in the general description of the position. This can be a part-time or full-time position. Salary is based on experience and length of service with the town.

Pay: $17.09 - $18.80 per hour
