Job Responsibilities
The Deputy Assessor assists the Assessor with the daily administration and operation of the Assessor’s Office, including the coordination of assessment activities, supervision of professional staff, and implementation of office procedures to improve efficiency and productivity. This position oversees the preparation and maintenance of the Real Estate, Personal Property, and Motor Vehicle Grand Lists, reviews assessment data, maintains records and GIS systems, and administers state and local tax relief and exemption programs. The Deputy Assessor provides technical assistance to taxpayers, attorneys, Town departments, Boards, and other stakeholders regarding assessment matters, while responding to public inquiries and explaining assessment procedures and regulations. Responsibilities also include preparing reports for state agencies, coordinating with the Tax Collector’s Office, managing departmental administrative functions such as purchase orders and payroll, maintaining public information resources, and supporting the Board of Assessment Appeals. In the absence of the Assessor, the Deputy Assessor assumes responsibility for the operation of the Assessor’s Office.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in business or a related field, along with a minimum of five years of experience in a municipal Assessor’s Office, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The candidate must possess and maintain a Certified Connecticut Municipal Assessor I (CCMA I) certification and a valid driver’s license. A thorough knowledge of Connecticut assessment laws, property valuation principles, and appraisal practices is required. Proficiency with computer-assisted mass appraisal (CAMA) and valuation software is preferred, as well as the ability to learn Town-specific systems. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong analytical, organizational, communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret regulations, exercise sound judgment, and establish effective working relationships with the public, Town officials, and other stakeholders.
Pay: $115,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year
