HOURS: 42 WORKED in 24 hours on 24 hours off 24 hours on and 120 hours off.
General Statement of Duties: The Dispatcher is a critical member of the West Warwick Fire Department team. As members of a team, Dispatchers and Emergency Responders work together to provide a service. Field response units cannot respond to the needs of citizens without the information provided by the dispatcher, the dispatcher cannot meet the needs of citizens without the field units. The Dispatcher receives calls from the public and promptly and accurately dispatches the right number and type of emergency apparatus to the scene of an incident. Handles other duties as assigned by the Director of Communications.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Dispatchers must be capable of working with little or no
direct supervision, however, when questions arise, supervision is provided by the Director of Communications, Asst. Director and the Battalion Chief.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
Receives all incoming calls to the fire department from the public, determines the level of service required and if of a non-emergency nature, directs the call to the proper office.
Takes accurate messages for Chief officers of the department and promptly relays the messages to the appropriate office.
Receives emergency calls on the fire department and E91l emergency lines, radio system, municipal fire alarm system and quickly and accurately dispatches emergency response units.
Maintains radio communication with responding units, logs all relevant times such as, time of dispatch, on scene, etc. Complies with requests from responding units for assistance, contact of listings, police response, etc.
Maintains radio and dispatch logs, hydrant and sprinkler logs, fire alarm system logs and fire alarm circuit reading logs. Reports any abnormal readings to the Director or Assistant Director.
Maintains and corrects the hard copy street and alarm box card file as required by the Director of Communications.
Compiles statistical reports and clerical assistance as required.Dispatchers are responsible for all equipment and the general appearance of the Dispatch Office.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Must be able to read and write English proficiently.
2. Must be able to provide a medically certified document that he/she has passed a hearing test in Accordance with NENA Hearing Standards for Public Safety Telecommunicates NENA-STA-007.3-2020 (prior to hiring). Hearing – Must have sufficient hearing in both ears to perform essential tasks without posing a direct threat to themselves or others.
3. Must have a working knowledge of fireground operations.
4. Must have a working knowledge of emergency medical systems.
5. Ability to speak clearly and distinctly at all times.
6. Ability to communicate with persons in crisis and panic situations.
7. Ability to condense rambling and disconnected material into concise and accurate messages.
8. Ability to think and act promptly in emergencies.
9. Ability to analyze a situation accurately and to take or suggest an effective course of action.
10. Thorough understanding of the capabilities of the communications and fire alarm system, and a working knowledge of surrounding cities and communication and alarm systems.
11. Physical and mental ability to work effectively under all conditions.
12. Knowledge of the geographic boundaries of the town, location of streets, important buildings and the resources inside and outside the department.
13. Ability to operate dispatch console, telephones, computer and other equipment as necessary.
Graduation from high school or equivalency.
Dispatching experience, knowledge of two-way radio systems.
Knowledge of 100 milli amp systems.
Knowledge of Radio Box systems.
