The Tiburon Police Department is seeking dedicated individuals who are committed to making a difference in one of the Bay Area’s most scenic communities. The Tiburon Police Department is a community service-oriented organization with an emphasis on maintaining an interactive and proactive response to community concerns. This is accomplished through ongoing programs and continuous in-house and P.O.S.T. training in a variety of areas.


DEFINITION

To perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; to control traffic flow and enforce State and local traffic regulations; to perform investigative work; to participate in and provide support and assistance to special department crime prevention and enforcement programs.


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entrance level classification in the professional police series requiring sworn peace officer status. Positions allocated to the Police Officer class may be assigned to one of a number of functional areas within the Police Department. 


SUPERVISION RECEIVED

General supervision is provided by a Police Sergeant. Technical or functional supervision may be provided by higher level police personnel. Assignments may require indirect supervision of non-sworn personnel. 


DUTIES 

  • Patrol Town in radio-equipped car; answer calls for the protection of life and property, and the enforcement of local and State laws; may conduct both preliminary and follow-up investigations of disturbances, prowlers, burglaries, thefts, hold-ups, vehicle accidents, death and other criminal incidents. 
  • Respond to calls related to traffic incidents and any other required emergencies; observe, monitor and control routine and unusual traffic conditions; assist and advise motorist and enforce traffic safety laws. 
  • Make arrests as necessary; interview victims, complainants and witnesses; interrogate suspects; gather and preserve evidence; testify and present evidence in court. 
  • Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses. 
  • Prepare reports of arrests made, activities performed and unusual incidents observed. 
  • Stop drivers who are operating vehicles in violation of laws; warn drivers against unlawful practices; issue citations and make arrests as necessary. 
  • Check buildings for physical security. 
  • Search, fingerprint and transport prisoners. 
  • Direct traffic at fire, special events and other emergency or congested situations. 
  • Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems and preserve good relationships with the general public. 
  • Assist in the performance of special investigative and crime prevention duties as required. 
  • Prepare investigative reports and case information, provide evidence and testimony in court. 
  • Answer questions from the public concerning local and State laws, procedures and activities of the Department. 
  • Interview victims, complainants, witnesses and suspects. 
  • Collect, preserve and maintain evidence and property found that is involved with suspected crimes. 
  • Serve warrants and subpoenas. 
  • Develop and maintain good relationships with the public, including informants and contacts which may be helpful in criminal investigations. 
  • Perform related duties as assigned. 


QUALIFICATIONS


Education:

The Police Officer position requires an education equivalent to completion of high school, preferably supplemented by college-level law enforcement related coursework. 

Applicants must possess a California P.O.S.T. approved Basic Certificate or completion of a California P.O.S.T. approved basic academy. 

Other Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age 
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License
  • Normal hearing and vision (vision uncorrected 20/70)
  • Must be free any of any felony convictions
  • Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship (Government Code Para. 1031). 
  • Must meet all Department medical, physical and psychological standards. 
  • Must have good moral character, emotional stability, and good written and verbal communication skills. 


COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Top Step Pay: $138,148* 

*Top step pay includes holiday pay, 5 years longevity pay, and POST advance certificate incentive.


Retirement: “Classic Members” - CalPERS 3% @ 55 for employees currently enrolled in a reciprocal or CalPERS classic retirement plan. Employee pays the 9% employee contribution and 3% of the employer’s share contribution. “New Members” - CalPERS 2.7% @ 57 for employees new to CalPERS or with a six month or longer break in a CalPERS or reciprocal retirement plan. Employee pays at least 50% of the Normal Cost of the Plan as calculated annually by CalPERS.


Cafeteria Benefits Plan: The Town will provide a monthly allowance towards medical, dental, life insurance, and long-term disability insurance. Employees have the opportunity to select from a variety of health plans that are administered through CalPERS. If the cost of benefits exceeds the allowance, the difference is paid by employee through payroll deductions. Town pays premium for $25,000 term life insurance policy


Long Term Disability: Employee pays premium for C.L.E.A. LTD plan


Vacation & Sick Leave: Accrue 1 day per month. Vacation accrual rate increases after 5 years. Eligible candidates may be placed in an advanced vacation tier in recognition of prior public service. 


Holidays: 12 paid holidays per year

20 years of service $285


Certificate Pay:  

POST Intermediate Certificate/Assoc of Arts/Science Degree $245

POST Advanced Certificate/Bachelor of Arts/Science Degree $375

POST Supervisory Certificate/Master of Arts/Science Degree $375


Differential Pay: $300/month

Bilingual Pay: $150/month

Uniforms/Safety Equipment: Provided by the Town

ABOUT THE TIBURON POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Tiburon Police Department was established in 1972 following the Town’s incorporation by 8 years. The department first operated from 80 Main Street before moving into surplus military housing in the late 1970’s. In 1999, the department moved into its current location at 1155 Tiburon Boulevard. 


The Tiburon Police Department consists of the Chief of Police, Captain, Detective, 3 patrol Sergeants, 8 patrol Officers, an Administrative and Emergency Services Coordinator and 2 Police Service Aides. The department is organized into a small administrative unit and four patrol teams, each lead by a sergeant. The Police Department prides itself on building lasting connections with the residents, businesses and visitors who make Tiburon such a special place to live, work and visit.


In addition to normal police activities, the Police Station also houses the Emergency Operations Center, which is equipped to manage disaster response for Tiburon and Belvedere. The Police Department and Emergency Operations Center are also responsible for developing and maintaining the Emergency Operations Plan for the entire Tiburon Peninsula.
