Wastewater Department Operator Apprentice
Scope of work – This full-time position is considered an essential employee and reports to the Wastewater Department Superintendent.
Job Description: General cleaning and painting of tanks, buildings and equipment located throughout the wastewater treatment plant. Maintenance and repair of plant equipment, pumping stations and collection system cleaning and repair. Perform wastewater sample collection and basic lab testing procedures. Work on weekends from 7am-12pm every third week. Be on call to respond to alarms and emergencies after normal working hours every third week. Be able to respond to alarms and emergencies within 45 mins. Assisting other public works departments as required.
The position functions under the requirements agreed to between the Town of Thurmont and the Maryland Rural Water Association. This apprenticeship program is aimed to train and prepare applicants to become a licensed wastewater operator. The applicant will be required to attend and successfully complete specialized training. The salary for this position is on a graduated scale based upon meeting specific training goals, passing required tests, and meeting supervisor’s expectations.
Job Requirements: Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license with the ability to obtain a Class B CDL license within twelve (12) months of employment, ability to work outside in all weather conditions; ability to read, write, and understand information obtained from samples and observations, have the ability to learn process control of the wastewater treatment plant and related equipment. Have basic computer skills including but not limited to working with excel and word. Must obtain a Class 5A Wastewater License within three (3) years after employment. Preference may be given for municipal wastewater system experience but is not required.
