SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Chief Marshal, the Sergeant is a sworn position in the Marshal’s Department with specific responsibility as a first-line supervisor, providing leadership and direction to Marshal’s Department personnel. This position serves and protects the public by working in partnership with the community through community policing efforts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Enforcement

  • Perform sworn police duties in the prevention of crime and enforcement of laws
  • Respond to basic police calls and oversees deputies in the proper handling of incidents, criminal and noncriminal
  • Respond to serious or unique calls to oversee and instruct deputies in the proper handling of incidents
  • Oversee critical incidents and provides guidance or assistance when necessary
  • Operate a variety of tools and equipment specific to law enforcement duties, including police radio, baton, handcuffs, handgun, various firearms, and other weapons as required
  • Investigate disturbances, accidents, crimes, felonies, and misdemeanors
  • Perform interviews and interrogations; testify in court as needed
  • Prepare and serve arrest and search and seizure warrants
  • Assist with code enforcement when needed: parking, animals, trash, snow removal

Supervision

  • Provide daily direction, assistance, and leadership to staff
  • Complete performance reviews for Deputy Marshals and Code Enforcement Officers
  • Assign, monitor, and evaluate work performed by assigned personnel; participate in the training of assigned personnel
  • Supervise and coordinate police operators relating to patrol, traffic, investigations, and special assignments
  • Maintain the Marshals Department skills academy for new employees, schedules instructors, reviews and approves course curriculum, and ensures proper training documentation
  • Serve as the Field Training Officer (FTO) Supervisor, ensure the FTO program has uptodate training material
  • Schedule officers in field training program; review Daily Observation reports
  • Supervise and coordinate different required training and certification programs for staff

Administration

  • Review policies and procedures from a risk management standpoint; ensure compliance with CIRSA standards and training requirements
  • Ensure staff are current with mandated Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training
  • Ensure compliance with current state laws and court rulings
  • May act in the capacity of Chief Marshal in their absence
  • Perform duties of Deputy Marshal to cover shifts as needed
  • Explain and follow the rules and procedures; communicate Marshals Department goals and objectives
  • Other tasks and special projects as assigned

Safety

  • Work safely to prevent accidents
  • Utilize PPE when necessary

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education/Experience/Licenses/Certifications):

High School Diploma or equivalent; valid Colorado Driver’s License required; Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) required or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire; five (5) years of law enforcement experience as a commissioned officer required; two (2) – four (4) years of supervising others preferred; experience in tactics, investigations, internal affairs preferred; maintain CPR and First Aid certifications throughout employment.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Required

Knowledge of: state, federal, and local laws, ordinances, and regulations; Marshals Department organization, policies, practices, procedures, goals and objectives, rules, regulations, and equipment; effective supervisory and instructional principles and techniques; community-based policing practices; patrol, traffic enforcement, criminal investigation, and related police services; laws and rules governing criminal evidence, arrest, custody, search and seizure.

Skill in: coordinating, training, and supervising employees; analyzing and recommending solutions to law enforcement problems; demonstrating proper use of applicable weapons, proper patrol, and investigative procedures; effective oral and written communication; maintaining composure under stressful situations; interpersonal relationships; public relations.

Environmental Factors

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in a variety of indoor and outdoor locations to include on-site work at calls/incidents, in a patrol vehicle, and the Marshals Department. When work is performed outdoors, the employee is subject to adverse weather conditions. The work schedule rotates with night, weekend, and holiday shifts. When the employee is performing the duties of this job, the employee is expected to work solo shifts.

Physical Factors

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may perform strenuous physical activity for periods of time; drives a Town vehicle; uses a computer; sits and stands for periods of time; walks and runs on slippery/uneven surfaces; kneels, crouches, twists, reaches, bends and crawls in confined spaces. While performing the duties of this job; the employee performs physical tasks, including physically restraining/subduing combative individuals, using bodily force to gain entrance through barriers; drawing and firing a handgun or other weapon, administering first aid; pushing, pulling, dragging, and moving suspects and/or others weighing up to one hundred and fifty (150) pounds over twenty (20) yards.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to blood and other bodily fluids/products.

Salary : $95,627 - $138,659
