What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker position at Town of Tappahannock?
MAJOR PURPOSE:
Under general supervision of the Public Works Superintendent, performs general laborer duties and operates heavy equipment as a member of a maintenance, grounds keeping, or garbage collection crew. This Class B CDL driver utilizes a variety of commercial construction vehicles for completing routine tasks and projects.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
· Performs a variety of heavy manual work in the maintenance and repair of water lines and sewer pipes, while occasionally completes duties such as heavy trash and brush pick-up.
· Drives commercial vehicles to include trash trucks, recycling trucks, and dump trucks for hauling stone and ground material for water line repairs.
· Ensures accurate trash collections on the assigned route sheet and excellent customer service.
· Using commercial sanitation vehicle, delivers and unloads garbage and refuse at the regional landfill.
· Mows grass with tractor, mower or weed-eater.
· Conducts water meter readings, replacements, and repairs as needed.
· Makes daily pre/post trip inspections on assigned vehicle to maintain maximum vehicle safety conditions and to check for any damaged or work parts or for any signs of tampering.
· Utilize commercial vehicles to perform snow removal.
· Performs other job-related duties as assigned or required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
Physical ability to perform heavy manual work.
Knowledge of how to operate both equipment and heavy equipment. Ability to drive a Class B CDL vehicle.
Knowledge of hazard assessment and emergency equipment. Ability to follow oral instructions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of 10th grade.
Two years of experience in heavy manual work in the construction and building trades operating equipment and heavy equipment.
One year of commercial driving experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Five years of experience in heavy manual work in the construction and building trades operating equipment and heavy equipment.
Three years of experience driving commercial construction vehicles.
REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATES:
Possession of a valid Virginia Driver’s license
Possession of valid Virginia Class B Commercial Driver’s License
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Worker will be subject to outside environmental conditions such as, extreme weather, cold, heat, noise, vibrations, and hazards.
Must have on-call ability as well as weekends, holiday, and overtime work.

Pay: $20.00 - $24.00 per hour
