Parks Technician I $40,201 - $53,425 annually
Parks Technician II $44,668 - $59,383 annually
- Performs manual labor and semi-skilled manual labor associated with the maintenance of the Town parks, trails, cemetery, open space forestry functions, and athletic fields.
- Inspects and repairs park equipment and facilities such as playground equipment, picnic tables, and signs.
- Inspects parks and trails for safety hazards such as debris and landslides.
- Inspects and maintains playgrounds and ballfields.
- Responds to on-site inquiries from the public.
- Maintains and repairs computerized park irrigation system, change and adjust sprinkler heads, maintains controllers, and assesses the installation and major maintenance of irrigation plumbing.
- Provides technical assistance on landscape and irrigation plans submitted to the Town for park, open space, and median development.
- Identifies various trees and plants by type and evaluates specific plant health and maintenance needs.
- Applies herbicides and pesticides in accordance with prescribed guidelines.
- Operates equipment including but not limited to all-terrain vehicles, tractors, trenchers, sod cutters, rot-tillers, skid steers, trucks, trailers and various hand tools.
- Maintains and repairs Town structures and buildings including two outdoor aquatic facilities.
- Confers with schools, community groups, Town departments, other agencies and outside resources for the planning and organization of special events.
- Assists department throughout the duration of community events including set-up and clean-up of grounds.
- Clears snow from parks, rights-of-way, sidewalks, and sport fields as needed.
- May be on 24-hour on-call status, required to work overtime, evenings and weekends.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of irrigation systems, including installation, troubleshooting and repair.
- Knowledge of pesticides, herbicides and their application.
- Knowledge of equipment and supplies supporting a parks maintenance function.
- Knowledge of building maintenance.
- Knowledge of laws and safety related to vehicle operation.
- Knowledge of park maintenance safety procedures.
- Knowledge of landscape maintenance, plant identification, irrigation systems, and basic small engine repair.
- Skill in maintaining records and logs.

- Skill in the safe and lawful operation of a motor vehicle.

Work Environment:
The majority of the work is performed in the field and on occasion in inclement weather. The employee regularly works around park maintenance equipment and is exposed to equipment vibration, fumes, airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee may occasionally work in high precarious places, and is exposed to electrical shock and sharp objects. The noise level can range from low to very loud.
Physical Requirements of the Job:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak, read, or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, use hands, fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Duties require a full range of physical motion and activities including manual digging, pushing, pulling, lifting, twisting and turning the upper body, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing in and out of meter pits, balancing, crawling, reaching for objects, walking and standing.
Special License, Registration, or Certification Required:
Parks Technician I – High school diploma or equivalent; minimum of two years of experience in parks, trails, and open space maintenance, irrigation systems, operation of park maintenance equipment, and/or facility maintenance. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Possess a Driver's License with a safe driving record for continued employment.
Parks Technician II – High school diploma or equivalent; minimum of four years of experience in parks, trails, and open space maintenance, irrigation systems, operation of park maintenance equipment, and/or facility maintenance. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Possess a Driver's License with a safe driving record for continued employment and one or more of the following: Landscape Technician Certification, Landscape Irrigation Auditor Certification, Irrigation Systems Certification, Certified Pool Operator License, Pesticide Applicator License, and / or Playground Safety Inspection Certification.
