The Stormwater Management Maintenance Technician is a full-time, on-site role based in Sullivan’s Island, SC, responsible for supporting the Town’s stormwater infrastructure and related public works activities. This position performs routine maintenance, inspection, and cleaning of storm drains, ditches, culverts, outfalls, and other stormwater assets to ensure proper drainage and reduce flooding risks. Daily tasks include operating and maintaining light and heavy equipment, using hand and power tools, removing debris and blockages, and assisting with minor repairs to pipes, catch basins, and associated infrastructure. The technician documents work performed, reports system issues or safety concerns, and may assist with storm event preparation and response, including setting up barricades and erosion-control measures. The role also involves working outdoors in varying weather conditions, adhering to safety procedures, and collaborating with other Public Works team members and Town departments as needed.

Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate effectively daily activities orally and in writing to the Town Administrator and Town Council.
  • Ability to prepare reports, budgets, and maintenance documentation.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, drainage maps, technical specifications, and regulatory documents.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions during emergency situations.
  • Experience with maintenance and repair tasks related to stormwater systems, public works, or similar infrastructure.
  • Ability to perform preventive maintenance to reduce downtime and extend the life of stormwater and related equipment.
  • Troubleshooting skills to identify, assess, and communicate issues within stormwater and drainage systems.
  • Exposure to or experience with industrial or municipal maintenance environments is beneficial.
  • Ability to work safely outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and to perform physical tasks such as lifting, bending, and working in confined spaces.
  • Effective teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete basic work documentation.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; relevant technical training or certifications in maintenance, public works, or stormwater operations are preferred.
  • Valid South Carolina driver’s license required; CDL preferred or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe.
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in stormwater maintenance, public works, utilities, drainage operations, or related field, including supervisory experience.
  • Experience with stormwater maintenance equipment and methods. Including operation of related equipment: backhoe, trackhoe, jet vac vehicles, stormwater pumps, etc.
