What are the responsibilities and job description for the Full time Maintainer position at Town of Somers?
Under the general supervision of the Foreman, the Maintainer is responsible for performing general maintenance work in the construction, repair, and maintenance of the town’s roads, bridges, fields, grounds, and facilities. Operates truck/tractor, light, and heavy equipment; transports materials to and from work sites; operates trucks and equipment in plowing and salting during winter operations. Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of assigned equipment, for cleaning and servicing tasks, and for performing minor maintenance on said equipment.
May be required to work at various locations and/or departments such as Highway Division, Parks and Buildings Division, or Transfer Station under the discretion of the First Selectman, DPW Director, or their designee. Must be willing to actively participate as a member of a Public Works Team.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
· Takes personal responsibility to provide exceptional customer service promote and maintain a positive Town image, constructive working environment, and fosters pride and professionalism in the workplace and community
· Plows and salts roads. Mow and maintain roadsides, fields, park grounds, and park facilities
· Clear storm drains; maintain and repair road surfaces
· Clean catch basins and culverts; clear roadsides. Participate in the repair and construction of catch basins
· Repairs and installs fences, street signs, guardrails, and roadside equipment
· Perform manual work in the laying of pipes, patching or resurfacing roads, and related construction and maintenance work
· Clean and maintain town buildings, including restroom facilities. Perform semi-skilled carpentry, electrical or plumbing repairs, or other projects in town buildings and facilities

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
For successful performance in this position, the incumbent will need to demonstrate the following:

- Traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in equipment operation as well as the occupational hazards and safety precautions

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS
· High School diploma or equivalent
· Five (5) years’ experience in highway maintenance and/or heavy construction, and experience in the safe operation, maintenance of manual and powered hand tools
· Experience in plowing and salting operations
· Current DOT medical card
· Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the essential job functions of this position
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
· A minimum of valid Commercial Driver’s License-B.
ENVIRONMENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
· Work will also be performed in the field, exposing the employee to outside atmospheric conditions; employee may occasionally be exposed to fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, and gases
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
· Finger dexterity is needed to operate tools and equipment
· Must possess mobility to work in and outdoors; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone
· Must be able to make color distinctions and have normal depth perception
· Stand, walk, lift, reach, bend and squat in the performance of job duties
· Regularly work in the field and on job sites and to tolerate exposure to dust and noise
· Physical strength and agility to do strenuous labor under all weather conditions for long periods of time
· Tolerate frequent exposure to extreme weather conditions for long periods of time
· Lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds
