Water/Wastewater Superintendent

Job Summary

The Superintendent of Water/Wastewater is a highly responsible Department Head position that is charged with the daily operation of the Town water system and wastewater treatment plant. This individual inspects, maintains, keeps records, plans, organizes and personally performs a variety of operational duties involved in the Town’s water treatment, wastewater treatment, water distribution and sewage collection systems.

This individual is appointed by the Mayor and reports directly to the Town Manager.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

· Manages all daily operations of the Town’s water treatment, wastewater treatment, water distribution and sewage collection systems;

· Supervise and train operations personnel;

· Coordinate and set priorities for operation maintenance and laboratory function;

· Implement preventive maintenance programs and perform scheduled equipment maintenance on pumps, motors, valves, etc.;

· Read water meters and follow up on water usage related complaints;

· Implement plans for the installation of new water meter services and new sewer service connections;

· Implement and complete routine and special sampling programs;

· Implement good housekeeping and odor control programs;

· Implement and organize an inventory of spare parts, tools, equipment, etc.;

· Maintain facility operations and maintenance records in a simple and concise manner;

· Evaluate the performance of the operations staff on a periodic basis;

· Support and enforce the Town of Snow Hill Personnel Rules & Regulations.

· Perform other related duties as directed by the Town Manager and Mayor.

Qualifications and Skills

· High school graduate or equivalency with five (5) years as a First-Line Supervisor;

· Must possess a Class 5A Wastewater Treatment Operators License;

· Must possess a Class 2 Water Treatment Operators License;

· Must possess the necessary certification for collection of drinking water samples;

· Thorough knowledge of the functions and servicing requirements of mechanical equipment and machinery;

· Thorough knowledge of the processes involved in the purification of water, including some knowledge of chemistry;

· Knowledge of both the trickling filter process and the activated sludge process of wastewater treatment;

· Must have basic knowledge of portable water treatment;

· Must have basic knowledge of mechanics and have a mechanical aptitude;

· Ability to inspect machinery and mechanical equipment in operation and detect malfunctions in operation;

· Ability to read simple meters and charts accurately and maintain simple records of shift operation;

· Ability to give, understand, and follow oral and written instructions;

· Ability to control the aeration tanks and primary and secondary clarifiers;

· Must be able to perform tests for dissolved oxygen, pH, chlorine, settle-able materials, suspended solids and S V and I;

· Ability to use a pH meter and centrifuge;

· Must be observant and pay close attention to detail;

· Must possess a valid Class C driver’s license and driving record of less than 4 points.

Summary

As a Water/Wastewater Superintendent, you will be essential in leading the Town's water system and wastewater treatment plant by optimizing water treatment and wastewater systems to ensure safe and efficient operations.

The position is being offered at $90,000 per year depending on qualifications and experience.
