PAY & BENEFITS:
Pay begins at $90,050.00 yearly salary for EMS Captain and is dependent upon applicable experience.
In addition to the base salary, this full-time position is eligible for an annual performance bonus as well as a longevity bonus.

Description

Under Limited supervision, plans, organizes, develops and provides oversight of the Emergency Medical services division of the Smyrna Fire Department (SFD). Functions include coordinating/ teaching EMS related education needed for license recertification, and also for professional development of fire department personnel, monitoring employees for competency within their licensure, preparing the program budget and EMS appraisal for the annual budgeting process, coordinating services with other agencies within the county, researching, reviewing and purchasing EMS products, and attending county wide and regional meetings as needed for interoperability.

     1.  Develops and Coordinates Training Activities

  • Coordinates, teaches and documents all in-service training for SFD personnel according to their level of licensure.

  • Coordinates additional in house and outside EMS training as needed for personnel skill set growth.

  • Ensures employees are receiving training that meets needs for recertification of state license.

  • Coordinates/teaches CPR/AED training to other town departments as requested.

  • Oversees and schedules annual EMS competency testing.

  • Conducts monthly review of personnel EMS licensure expiration dates.

  • Provides daily EMS-related instruction/training to on duty crews as necessary.


     2.  Oversees EMS Activities and Quality Assurance

  • Ensures adherence to applicable protocols by personnel in the treatment of patients.

  • Serves as a liaison between Smyrna Fire and Rutherford EMS to help with development of new standards and treatment protocols.

  • Researches and advises personnel of developments in EMS practices and changes at the federal, state and local level.

  • Administer, document and review the departments Patient Care Report (PCR) QA 

  • program.

  • Investigates citizen complaints involving the EMS response by the department.

  • Investigates complaints by department personnel pertaining to the actions of non-department EMS personnel that may arise during an emergency call.

  • Attend staff, quality control, and safety meetings as scheduled.

  • Complete an annual personnel and training audit.

  • Prepares and recommends annual budget for the EMS division.

  • Prepares the annual EMS Appraisal necessary for the budgeting process.

  • Stays current with trends in EMS, reviews and evaluates new methods and standards.

  • May respond to calls for QA purposes or to assist on-scene personnel.


     3.  Oversees Procurement and Maintenance of Medical Supplies and Equipment

  • Researches current and emerging EMS technology and develops specifications for new equipment.

  • Negotiates with vendors to provide supplies at a cost that most benefits the Town of Smyrna.

  • Assists with preparation of RFP’s (Requests for Proposal) for EMS related services and products, reviews proposals and gives recommendations for procurement.

  • Oversees ordering of all medical supplies and maintains inventory.

  • Schedules annual equipment maintenance and administers service agreements.

  • Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment, makes routine repairs as able; submits equipment for major repairs or replacement as needed.

  • Makes plans for emergency replacement of vital equipment when needs arise.

  • Delivers replacements for broken/missing equipment to the field/stations as needed.


Additional Job Functions

  • Performs other related duties as required.

  • Maintains TN state EMS licensure at the Paramedic level.


  • Valid Tennessee Driver's License required. 

  • Must possess thorough knowledge of related laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations. 

  • Current TN Licensed Paramedic (In good standing)

  • Instructor 1 (TN state or Pro Board)

  • Current BLS Instructor certification (AHA)

  • Current ACLS Instructor Certification (AHA)

  • Current PALS Instructor Certification (AHA)

  • Incident Safety Officer (Preferred)

  • Bachelor’s degree in EMS or EMS management ore related field preferred, with a minimum of five years of EMS supervisory experience (fire-based preferred).

  • Must have or be available to work towards, and obtain NIMS ICS certification levels 100, 200, 300, 700 and 800.
