Position Description

Title: Light-Equipment Operator

Department: Public Works

Pay Grade 6

Purpose:

Employee is responsible for operating a variety of construction equipment in general utility, construction maintenance, storm water maintenance, or sanitation services. This position is under the supervision of the Public Works Supervisor or Environmental Manager.

Fair Labor Standards Act Services:

Non-exempt. (Hourly)

Essential Functions of the Job:

Essential functions are fundamental job duties. They do not include marginal tasks, which are also performed but are not incidental to the primary functions. The omissions of specific statements of duties do not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position, nor does every position allocated to the job necessarily perform every duty listed.

All associated work to maintain street infrastructure and right-of-way.

Clean drains; dig ditches; replace culverts; build or repair spillways, catch basins, headwalls, and grates; operate street cleaner with sweeper.

Repair major street damage: crack sealing, core drilling or saw cutting, remove and repair asphalt.

Salt and plow streets; mow rights-of-way; haul brush; pick up leaves.

Remove debris from streets, drainage ways, rights-of-way and other Town properties.

Work as a construction crew in road repair; set up work zone and direct traffic around construction sites.

Inspect and maintain hand tools and equipment; inform supervisor of need for repair or replacement.

Perform duties of Street Worker/Laborer as needed; other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of departmental functions, rules, regulations and procedures.

Knowledge of the use and routine care of tools, equipment and materials used in general maintenance and construction work.

Knowledge of safety standards and maintenance of construction equipment and vehicles.

Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Knowledge of state and local traffic regulations.

Equipment:

Street Sweeper, Dump truck, loader, backhoe, asphalt machine and roller, and other construction equipment, such as jackhammer, saws, rakes, shovels, etc.

Educational Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience Required:

A valid CDL, Class B with Airbrake Endorsement.

If individual doesn’t have a CDL, they will be required to obtain it within one year of the hire date.

Problem Solving Requirements:

Solve problems in situations where most problems have occurred before and solutions are familiar.

Writing Skills Required:

No writing required.

Speaking/Presentation Skills Required:

Answer questions with a brief response or provide standard information to citizens, visitors, callers, supervisors, or other employees.

None – all activities are established by others.

Work involves a variety of routine tasks performed in accordance with established and prescribed procedures.

Close supervision with frequent checks.

Effects of Work Errors:

Errors are readily detected in normal course of work by standard check resulting in some difficulty in loss of time to correct.

Working Conditions:

On average 30% is standing, 30% walking, and 40% operating equipment. Approximately 60 lbs. or more may be required lifting.
