Position: Entry-Level Utility Operator (Trainee)
Location: Town of Round Hill, Virginia
Service Area: Public Water & Sewer System for 4,000 residents across 1,850 homes
Reports To: Utility Supervisor
Work Schedule: 40 hours per week (some weekend shifts, holidays, and emergency calls expected)
The Town of Round Hill, Virginia, located in Loudoun County, is about 20 minutes from Leesburg, VA; 45 minutes from Frederick, MD; and 30 minutes from both Winchester, VA and Charles Town, WV.
We are seeking a motivated and technically inclined Entry-Level Utility Operator (Trainee) to join our growing utility team. No prior water or wastewater operations experience is required—but we’re looking for someone with a strong foundation in any of the following:
· science,
· math,
· technical work
· lab experience,
· environmental science,
· mechanical systems.
You’ll be trained on-the-job by experienced operators to help maintain and operate Round Hill’s public water and sewer system, including 12 public wells, 4 treatment plants, and over 30 miles of water and sewer lines. This is a great opportunity to begin a meaningful public service career with growth potential and professional licensing support.
Ideal Background and Interests:
- College degree preferred, high school diploma or GED required; additional coursework in science, math, or technical trades is a plus
- Interest in learning water/wastewater treatment operations, environmental systems, lab testing, or mechanical maintenance
- Any experience in laboratory work, environmental science, trades, or utility work is helpful
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and maintain accurate records
- Comfortable working indoors and outdoors in all weather
- Willing to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and emergency calls when needed
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record required
- Ability to obtain Virginia Class 4 Water/Wastewater License within one year (training and study support provided)
What You’ll Learn and Do:
- Collect water and wastewater samples; conduct basic lab tests
- Monitor gauges, meters, and SCADA systems
- Operate pumps, valves, and chemical feeders under supervision
- Assist with preventive maintenance and cleaning of facilities
- Learn how to regulate treatment processes and support safe, reliable public water and sewer services
- Attend required training, classes, and certification prep courses (paid by Town)
