What are the responsibilities and job description for the FIREFIGHTER DRIVER position at Town of Pineville, NC?
This person performs duties, both in emergency and non-emergency situations, related to fire protection, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, and emergency management delivery. Serves as the principal hands-on labor in providing fire department emergency and non-emergency services to the community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responds to fire incidents and conducts tasks including interior attack, ventilation, salvage, overhaul, or fireground support operations as directed.
- Responds to emergency medical incidents and serves as a member of the medical team as directed.
- Participates in emergency rescue operations and supports specialized teams including various types of rescue incidents such as swift water, dive, high angle, trench, auto extrication, and building collapse.
- Assists in performing routine maintenance of all fire apparatus and tools of the department including nonpowered tools such as axes pike poles, ladders, and other miscellaneous equipment.
- Performs routine facility maintenance including the equipment associated with the building.
- Responds to hazardous materials incidents and supports the Hazardous Materials Team as directed in the identification, mitigation, and containment of hazardous material spills.
- Participates in emergency management functions such as spotting for severe weather and storms and notifying the appropriate chain of command.
- Participates in public education programs by assisting in conducting fire department tours, demonstrations, and presentations.
- Participates in pre-fire analysis, in reviewing target hazards within the company district, and establishing actions to be taken at the time of an incident.

Minimum Qualifications:
- North Carolina Firefighter Certification or equivalent as granted by the State of North Carolina
- North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician- Basic
- Valid North Carolina Class “B” Driver’s License or South Carolina equivalent
- ICS-100 Intro to the Incident Command System
- ICS-200 ICS for a Single Resource and Initial Action Incidents
- ICS-700 National Incident Management System, An Introduction
- Successful Completion of Pineville-Morrow Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Inc. Physical by a medical doctor obtaining a successful pulmonary function release form in compliance with OSHA 1910.134 (prior to reporting for duty and maintained annually)
- Successful Completion of Pineville-Morrow Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Inc. Firefighter Related Physical Ability Test (prior to hire and maintained annually)
- Completion of Pineville-Morrow Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Inc. Respiratory Program in compliance with OSHA 1910.134 (prior to reporting for duty and maintained annually)
- Completion of Pineville-Morrow Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Inc. Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus SCBA Fit Testing in compliance with OSHA 1910.134 (prior to reporting for duty and maintained annually)
- Completion of Pineville-Morrow Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Inc. Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus SCBA Training in compliance with OSHA 1910.134 (initially must be completed during the first six months and maintained annually)
- Completion of Pineville-Morrow Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Inc. Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) Online Training (initially must be completed during the first six months and maintained annually)
- Successful Completion of Pineville-Morrow Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Inc. Driver Check Off Procedure for Light Rescues, Brush Truck and Engines. Employee has 3 months from hire date to complete Driver Check Off Procedure for Light Duty Rescues and Engine Company. Employee has 6 months from hire date to be checked off on Squad and Tower Ladder Companies.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Skills in firefighting, rescue techniques, hazardous materials awareness, and emergency management functions. Skills in performing search and rescue, forcible entry, ventilation, salvage, overhaul, and support functions at firefighting incidents. Skills in performing support functions for all emergency service delivery areas.
- Knowledge of fire behavior, building construction, hazardous materials identification, city policies, department policies and departmental standard operating procedures, rescue principles, the city’s emergency operations plan, and the Uniform Fire Code.
- Ability to act as an effective team member at all emergency incidents involving fire protection and emergency management functions. Ability to communicate and effectively deal with the general public and school age children. Ability to perform effectively under stressful and adverse conditions.
