Job Summary

Examples of Essential Duties
- Ensures the Town’s urban forest, open space, and trails are maintained in excellent condition.
- Performs divisional maintenance as assigned: mowing, weed control/pesticide application, pest management, pruning, climbing, seeding, trail maintenance, snow removal, and other operations as required to maintain and enhance the Town's outdoor assets.
- Assists in the supervision of employees; conducts and oversees hiring, scheduling, employee feedback, performance reviews, staff training and development, discipline/termination, and employee recognition processes for assigned staff; creates weekly work reports for subordinates to direct and monitor weekly activities; leads work groups through projects/assignments in forestry, open space, and trails.
- Participates in snow removal of Town parking lots, trails, and sidewalks.
- Assists with monitoring and leading contract work and programs as directed; responds to complaints and/or concerns as directed.
- Participates in the setup, teardown, and cleanup of various special events to include tents, tables, chairs, and other event-related materials.
- Services and maintains assigned equipment and makes minor mechanical adjustments and repairs on related equipment such as checking/servicing fuel, oil, and coolant levels, tire pressure, and general appearance; takes necessary steps to bring equipment up to operating standards; prepares and maintains usage records.
- Attends training as determined necessary to maintain certification and competencies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires an associate’s degree in urban forestry, landscape horticulture, or a closely related field, supplemented by three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in urban forestry, climbing, arboriculture, and open space maintenance with coursework in urban forestry, arboriculture, weed management, and horticulture.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Driver’s License, issued by the State of Colorado for the type of vehicle operated; safe driving record and a minimum of 2 years of driving history.
Possession of or the ability to obtain the following certifications within one (1) year of hire: Valid Colorado Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake and tanker endorsements, CPR/First Aid, AED, Flaggers Certification, valid Colorado Department of Agriculture Qualified Supervisor Pesticide Applicator’s License (rangeland, right-of-way, turf, and ornamental).

- Knowledge of equipment, materials, techniques, and supplies used in the maintenance of trees and open space.
- Knowledge of tree and plant identification.
- Knowledge of proper tree and shrub pruning and removal techniques.
- Knowledge of best practices, techniques, and safety utilized in forestry and open space management.
- Knowledge of and ability to perform climbing using proper equipment, techniques, and standards.
- Skill in the training and supervision of personnel.
- Skill in the use of computers and various software programs.
- Skill in the provision of customer service.
- Skill in verbal and written communication.
- Ability to operate and maintain heavy forestry, landscape, and construction equipment such as bucket trucks, chippers, backhoes, tractors, and dump trucks.
- Ability to operated and maintain small/light equipment such as chainsaws, shovels, rakes, shop equipment, and power tools.
- Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to understand and practice safety and best practices at the line level.
- Ability to work irregular hours or on-call weekends, evenings, holidays, and/or during emergency situations if needed.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.

General and Sensory Requirements
The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and use hands and fingers to handle or operate objects, tools, or controls. Duties may also require stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing stairs or ladders, and maintaining balance. The employee must be able to talk and hear effectively, both in person and over the phone, and must be capable of operating a vehicle if required by the role. Vision requirements include consistent near and far visual acuity, depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus to allow a broad field of vision.
Heavy Physical Demands
This position requires sustained and demanding physical activity. The employee must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to fifty (50) pounds frequently and more than one hundred (100) pounds occasionally with assistance. .
