Position Summary/Purpose:

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) play a critical role in the healthcare system, where their quick reactions and competent care can mean the difference between life and death. EMTs are trained to respond to a wide range of emergency situations, including motor vehicle accidents, heart attacks, drownings, childbirth, and various other medical emergencies and traumas. EMTs are dedicated professionals who provide vital services in times of crisis. Their ability to deliver immediate and effective care ensures that patients receive the best possible outcomes during emergencies.

Essential Job Functions:

Emergency Response

  • Respond promptly to emergency calls, providing immediate and efficient care
  • Contribute to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers by following established standards and procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment(PPE)
  • Conduct thorough assessments of patients to identify the nature and extent of their injuries or illnesses
  • Take vital signs, obtain patient histories, and perform physical examinations to determine the necessary course of action
  • Administer first aid treatment or life support care to sick or injured patients, may include performing CPR, controlling bleeding, treating shock, and managing other critical conditions
  • Safely transport patients to medical facilities, ensuring they receive continuous medical care en route
  • Operate emergency vehicles in a safe and efficient manner, adhering to traffic laws and regulations.
  • Maintain clear and effective communication with dispatchers, medical personnel, and patients’ families, providing detailed reports on patients’ conditions and treatments to receiving medical staff adhering to Federal HIPAA guidelines.
  • Accurately document all patient care activities, including assessments, treatments, and patient responses
  • Complete necessary reports and records in compliance with legal and organizational requirements, including electronic Patient Care Report (ePCR) prior to leaving at the end of a shift

Equipment and Building Maintenance

  • Ensure that emergency vehicles and medical equipment are clean, stocked, and in good working order
  • Regularly check and maintain supplies and equipment to be prepared for any emergency
  • Maintain oxygen levels in ambulance tanks at not less than 500 pounds per tank, order oxygen as needed
  • Keep the fuel level in all vehicles above 3/4 of a tank
  • Clean the outside and inside of all vehicles weekly, and as needed
  • Ensure products are labeled appropriately and not expired
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area following OSHA infection control guidelines.
  • Keep the apparatus floors clean in both stations
  • Empty all garbage, including red bag garbage, in both stations and all vehicles
  • Ensure all living areas are kept clean and things are stowed in the proper areas
  • Do laundry as needed
  • Take out recycling cans and garbage cans to road based on pick up schedules
  • Ensure all personal items are labeled and refrigerator/freezer remains cleaned and organized.

Education and Training

  • Participate in ongoing training and education to stay current with medical practices and protocols
  • Maintain certification and be knowledgeable about the latest advancements in emergency medical care
  • Review and update appropriate policies and procedures as per regulations to maintain compliance with State, Federal and Medical Control regulations
  • Assist with onboarding and training of new employees
  • Learn how to navigate the town of Old Lyme; all employees must demonstrate their ability to use the ambulance navigation system and area maps to find a given location in town

Other

  • Report all problems, concerns or situations to the Chief of Service or President immediately
  • Report any mechanical problems to the engineer, and either the Chief of Service or the Deputy Chief
  • Participate in outreach activities including public education and community projects
  • Be an active member in growth and development by offering suggestions, solutions and ideas when issues arise
  • Other job duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at the Basic, Intermediate, or Paramedic level
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
  • Current CPR certification
  • 21 Years of age or older
  • Physical stamina and the ability to lift and carry heavy loads
  • Previous experience as an EMT or Paramedic

Knowledge, Ability and Skill (Demonstrated Competence in the Following Areas)

Knowledge:

  • Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of emergency medical technician techniques, procedures and protocols
  • Strong knowledge Old Lyme South End Volunteer Ambulance Association’s operating procedures and guidelines

Ability:

  • High level ability to implement clinical care in accordance with outlined policies and procedures
  • Ability to perform duties and solve problems in an independent manner with minimal need for supervision
  • Ability lift and carry patients on backboard or stretcher
  • Ability to recognize, establish and deal with priorities to achieve a high level of productivity and efficiency
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to remain calm, composed and exercise sound judgement in high-stress situations

Skill:

  • Excellent emergency medical technician skills
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Supervision:

Supervision Scope: Performs varied emergency response services requiring specific knowledge; works independently and in combination with others; handles significant amount of physical labor.

Supervision Received: Works under the direction of the Chief of Service, following professional standards, procedures and policies.

Supervision Given: May provide instruction to others

Job Environment:

Work Environment and Responsibilities:

Work is conducted in various indoor and outdoor settings in all weather conditions. Exposure to high noise levels is common. Involves driving; may include exposure to hazardous substances or materials, precarious places, and working near mechanical moving parts.

Equipment Operation:

The role requires operating an ambulance and all associated medical equipment.

Interactions:

Most interactions are with the general public in stressful situations. Additional contact occurs with fellow employees within the department or other town departments, with occasional contact with vendors. Communication is mostly conducted in person.

Impact of Errors:

Errors in judgment or omissions could lead to delays in service, injury to employees or residents, damage to town facilities or equipment, and potential liability.
