About the Role
The Street Maintenance Technician II performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks and operates light to medium equipment within the Streets Section of the Public Services Department. This role supports the construction, maintenance, and repair of Town streets, sidewalks, and related infrastructure to ensure safe and efficient transportation systems for the community.
Work involves tasks such as asphalt paving, concrete finishing, masonry, landscaping, stormwater system maintenance, traffic control, and support of Town-sponsored special events. Employees may operate dump trucks, loaders, and other equipment; assist with crowd management and pedestrian safety efforts during public events; and participate in snow and ice control operations. Responsibilities may include the installation and removal of barricades, barriers, temporary signage, traffic control devices, and other safety equipment used during festivals, parades, community gatherings, and roadway projects.
Employees work both independently and as part of a crew in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions. The position requires responding to after-hours call-backs as needed and supporting emergency operations during adverse weather events.
Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation and inspection to ensure adherence to safety practices, instructions, and established standards. Employees are subject to hazards associated with street maintenance, including exposure to traffic, heavy equipment, extreme weather, and environmental conditions.
Schedule: This position is regularly scheduled to work Friday through Monday and supports weekend operations and special events as needed.
- Perform semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in maintaining and repairing streets, sidewalks, cemeteries, and driveways
- Operate dump trucks to haul materials such as dirt, gravel, and equipment
- Operate loaders and may assist with backhoe operations for basic excavation tasks
- Prepare asphalt for resurfacing and patching projects
- Lay, pour, and finish concrete for curbs, gutters, and sidewalks; build forms and perform masonry work
- Hand grade streets, ditches, and driveways
- Clean storm drains and catch basins
- Perform mowing, trimming, and general landscaping of work areas
- Set up traffic control devices, including cones, barricades, barriers, and signage; may perform flagging duties
- Assist with crowd control and pedestrian safety measures during festivals, parades, community events, and other public gatherings
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of Town-sponsored special events, including installing and removing temporary traffic control and safety equipment
- Fabricate, install, and maintain street signs and pavement markings
- Assist with snow and ice removal using equipment or manual labor
- Assist in minor repair and maintenance of equipment and vehicles
- Perform other related duties as required
• Two (2) to four (4) years of related experience in street maintenance, construction, or public works;
OR
• An equivalent combination of education and experience
Special Requirements:
• Possession of a valid North Carolina Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire (Class “A” preferred)
• Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver’s Permit
• North Carolina Pesticide License is preferred
• Ability to work on-call and respond to after-hours emergencies as needed
Salary : $47,840 - $52,000
