Now Hiring: Part-Time Seasonal Parks and Recreation Ranger – Athletic Event Support

Location: Mills River Park, Mills River, NC
Primary Schedule: Saturday mornings (6:00 am – 12:00 pm) during spring and fall athletic seasons (approximately 6 hours per week)
Pay: $19.50 / hour

The Town of Mills River is seeking a seasonal part-time Parks and Recreation Ranger to support operations at Mills River Park, with a primary focus on athletic field preparation and weekend athletic activities.

This position plays an important role in ensuring athletic fields and facilities are ready for games, practices, and other scheduled activities. The Ranger will assist with field preparation, facility checks, customer service, basic park upkeep, and enforcing park rules in a professional and courteous manner.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, supporting youth sports, and helping create a positive experience for park visitors, teams, coaches, and community members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare athletic fields and facilities before scheduled games and practices.
  • Perform routine game-day field preparation, including dragging infields, lining fields, setting bases, and completing field readiness checks.
  • Inspect athletic fields, restrooms, and surrounding areas for safety concerns prior to activities.
  • Assist teams, coaches, officials, visitors, and park users with questions and general needs.
  • Monitor park facilities during assigned shifts.
  • Perform basic grounds and facility upkeep, including trash removal, pet waste removal, restroom cleaning, sweeping sidewalks, and maintaining overall park appearance.
  • Report maintenance, safety, or facility concerns.
  • Enforce park rules and policies in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Support athletic rentals, Town special events, and other high-use activities as needed.
  • Complete field condition checks following weather events.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience in parks/recreation, athletic field preparation, maintenance, customer service, or related areas preferred.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with the public, coaches, officials, and park users.
  • Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks with limited supervision.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds and navigating uneven outdoor terrain.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License required.

Work Schedule & Pay

  • Approximately 6 hours per week during spring and fall athletic seasons.
  • Primary schedule will be Saturday mornings, generally beginning at 6:30 AM, to prepare fields and facilities before scheduled athletic activities.
  • Additional hours may be available for tournaments, special events, rentals, holidays, and other high-use periods throughout the year.
  • Schedule may vary based on athletic programming, park needs, and special events.
  • Occasional Sunday, evening, or holiday shifts may be required.
  • Holiday shifts receive time and a half pay.

Special Requirements

All offers are contingent upon successful completion of a fingerprint-based state and national criminal history record check conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and a drug screen.
