What are the responsibilities and job description for the Water Operator position at Town of Medfield?
Position Purpose: This position performs all necessary work in order to maintain, inspect and repair water and wastewater systems within the Town of Medfield. This position is required to operate motor equipment. This role ensures organizational efficiency in the application of prescribed policies, procedures, and methods. This position performs all other related work as required.
Essential Functions: (The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. § Performs water main and service line installation and repair.
§ Repairs, replaces, maintains and operates fire hydrants.
§ Performs the hydrant flushing program twice a year.
§ Maintains pumping stations including all daily duties required at the stations.
§ Operates a variety of pneumatic, hydraulic, electric and gas hand tools and equipment necessary to perform assigned duties.
§ Must have knowledge of water distribution parts and methods of installation.
§ Performs water and sewer inspections for all contracted work, public or private.
§ Conducts water sampling and water testing.
§ Performs investigations and diagnoses water and sewer system problems including leak detection and makes necessary repairs.
§ Monthly overtime mandated for weekend pump station duties on a rotating schedule and as needed for emergencies occurring after hours including snow and ice operations.
§ Should have familiarity with backflow prevention.
§ Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
: High School Diploma, 3 years of experience in water, wastewater or construction industry preferably in the public sector working with local government, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Possession of a valid Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) with Air Brakes
Possession of a valid Massachusetts 2A Hoisting license.
Possession of valid Massachusetts 2T/2D water licenses.

: Knowledge: Working knowledge of water and sewer system materials, methods, and techniques relative to construction and maintenance. Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in the work performed. Must have knowledge of all safety procedures and be able to demonstrate the proper use of all required safety equipment.
Ability: Ability to operate light and heavy equipment. Have working knowledge of departmental policies and procedures. Must have knowledge of all safety procedures and be able to demonstrate the proper use of all required safety equipment. Ability to evaluate and recommend repairs, keep customer inconvenience to a minimum. Demonstrated experience in effectively dealing with the public. Have the ability to prepare written and oral reports. Must possess the ability to read and interpret blueprints and plans. Have the ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with staff and the public and to prioritize and complete multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
Skill: Skill in operating the above mentioned equipment, strong customer service skills, strong organizational skills.

This position requires frequent moderate to heavy physical effort while performing duties. Stoops, kneels, crouches, and/or crawls. Regularly required to walk, stand, sit; uses hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms as in physically picking up tools, supplies and other common construction site objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Vision and hearing at or correctable to normal ranges.
Supervision: Supervision Scope: Functions are generally well defined and limited in scope but which may involve some judgment and initiative in determining method of completion.
Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the Foreman, referring all questionable cases and problems to supervisor.

Job Environment:
§ Work is performed outdoors and/or inside trucks/equipment, at which time the employee may be exposed to weather extremes of heat and cold temperatures and inclement weather. Required to traverse uneven terrain and is subject to the hazards associated with construction sites. Work environment is very loud. On call for emergencies.
§ Regularly operates an automobile/light truck and operate equipment.
§ Interacts frequently with other town departments, contractors, homeowners and vendors; makes contact with the general public. Contacts require an information exchange dialogue.
