Description

DEFINITION
This position will teach recreational skills in accordance with the principles and guidance of the governing body of the program, ensuring an enjoyable and rewarding experience for students.
We are looking for part-time Mountain Bike Instructors to serve our Gymnastics Summer Camps. This position is ideal for anyone with strong recreational skills and experience instructing students . As a Recreation Instructor I for the Town of Mammoth Lakes, you will provide instruction for private and group lessons for youth. Scheduled hours vary depending on programming. Anticipated program duration is four (4) weeks.
Previous experience and/or certification required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives general supervision from the Recreation Supervisor(s) and indirect supervision from the Recreation Manager.

Examples of Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to:


  • Assess and mitigate risks that arise during the course of programming
  • Develop quality lesson plans, activities, and skills progressions for groups and individuals.
  • Lead participants and adjust instruction as needed according to group age, ability, etc.
  • Meet with parents to discuss participant’s progress, and keep students and parents informed of current activities and skill development opportunities.
  • Keep records of completed reports, certificates, and attendance.
  • Maintain training and education certifications as needed.
  • Remain knowledgeable of the latest rules, regulations, and trends of the activity.
  • Establish and maintain class morale and a motivating environment.
  • Ensure all students receive an equitable amount of instruction.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Ability to:

  • Proficiently perform the skill you are instructing
  • Provide a positive role model for participants.
  • Lead and instruct individual and group classes.
  • Complete work with little to no oversight.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • React with good judgment in an emergency situation.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Work an irregular schedule, including early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Adhere to Town and department-established rules and regulations, including workplace safety regulations.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Perform general clerical work, including maintenance of appropriate records and compiling information for reports.
  • Pass an appropriate background check prior to the hire date.
Knowledge of:
  • Procedures for developing activity specific classes, programs, and special events.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions.
  • Possession of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/First Aid Certificate.
Experience & Training:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade preferred. Certification to teach from a recognized governing body highly preferable.
Experience:
Some experience in recreational and/or child-related activities and programs and/or coaching.
Licenses:
Possession of or ability to obtain prior to beginning work:
  • First Aid, CPR, and AED Certificates.
  • Any other certificates which may be legally required.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within the state-required timeframe of ten (10) days from hire date, a valid California, Class C driver’s license with an acceptable driving record is preferred.
