JOB SUMMARY:
Assist in the enforcement of fire prevention codes through the review of new building plans for fire safety compliance and the coordination of fire prevention activities with local agencies. The Part-Time Fire Marshal shall also assist in the daily operations of the Bureau of Building and Zoning Enforcement to ensure that all construction complies with all State and Town Building Codes as well as to ensure compliance with Town zoning laws and ordinances, and other pertinent laws.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Inspects public/commercial buildings issue violation notices and ensure adherence to state fore codes and local laws.
Inspects sprinkler and fire alarm systems for compliance with NYS Fire Prevention and Building Codes
Review plans for new construction and fire protection equipment installations.
Assists CEO’s in review of building plans for compliance with fire safety requirements
Prepares detailed reports, maintain records and perform related technical/investigative tasks.
Documents with photographs fire hazards that may be found during inspection
Investigate complaints dealing with zoning violations, prepare correspondence requiring corrective action and perform follow up investigation to ensure corrective action has been taken
Keeps up to date on current building and fire prevention codes and town zoning laws and ordinances
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Employees in this position do not have any supervisory responsibilities.
WORK IMPACT:
It is essential that the Part-Time Fire Marshal be knowledgeable of the appropriate fire prevention codes, building codes and Town zoning laws and ordinances that impact the residents of the Town of Malta. The enforcement of these codes, laws and ordinances, as well as the safety of the residents who occupy or utilize these structures is the responsibility of the Building and Planning Department and the employee holding this position.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to perform climbing, stooping, balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. Ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
The employee is expected to perform duties inside as well as outdoors. Environmental conditions will vary with respect to temperature, noise, proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat and exposure to chemicals.
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
(a) One year of experience as a Fire Inspector; or
(b) One year of experience as a certified Building Safety Inspector(BSI); or
(c) Three years of paid experience as a firefighter; or
(d) Six years of experience as a volunteer firefighter, at least two years of which must have been in a line officer position; or
(e) An equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated in (a), (b), (c) and (d) above
Required to have a New York State Drivers license and have routine drug/alcohol screening
