LABORER I Job Description

: The duties performed are primarily of a manual unskilled nature requiring physical endurance and a willingness to perform heavy work. On occasion, employees in this class are assigned semi-skilled tasks which may involve the utilization of hand-operated equipment. Specific directions are received from a supervisor.

: The typical work activities listed below, while providing representative examples of the variety of work assignments in the title, do not describe any individual position. Incumbents in this title may perform some or all of the following, as well as other related activities not described.

Assists in patching streets and roads;

Rakes and shovels asphalt;

Manually loads and unloads trucks;

Manually excavates and backfills for construction and repairs;

Cleans streets, park areas, culverts and basins;

Repairs guide rails manually;

Charges mixing machines with cement, sand and stone;

Assists in cleaning sewers and catch basins and in laying pipe and building catch basins;

Assists in soil and rock excavation;

Cuts grass with walk behind mower or riding mowers up to 48“ mowing deck;

Trims shrubs and trees, rakes leaves, cuts brush and spades flower beds;

Assists with tree planting, removal and weed cutting;

Acts as a flagperson;

Assists in the installation and maintenance of traffic signs and markings, and in bridge construction and maintenance;

Assists in solid waste operations;

Assists in painting signs, bridges or other structures and facilities;

Assists in the maintenance and repair of buildings;

May operate transportation vehicles;

Works as helper on a snow plow or sander;

Performs other assigned tasks.
