POLICE OFFICER POSITION SUMMARY
The individual in this position works an assigned shift, performing patrol, investigative, traffic and boating enforcement. The individual responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, and detects, investigates, and arrests people involved in crimes. The individual also performs law enforcement, traffic enforcement, crime prevention, and community-oriented policing activities. Responsibilities of this position include the use of discretion in handling difficult and emergency situations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION
- Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service
- Prepares a variety of reports and records
- Arrests violators of the law and prepare cases for court filing
- Enforces Federal, State and local laws and ordinances
- Obtains, collects, and processes evidence
- Conducts preliminary and follow-up interviews
- Assists other officers in emergency and non-emergency situations
- Patrols Town streets and commercial and residential areas to preserve peace
- Conducts traffic and parking enforcement
- Conducts house and business checks
- Conducts computer inquiries of suspicious people and all arrestees
- Testifies in court
- Apprehends individuals with necessary degree of force
- Responds to domestic disturbances and neighborhood disputes
- Provides information, assistance, and counseling to the public
- Conducts field interviews and initiate reports of suspicious persons and incidents
- Maintains radio contact with communications
- Reports identifiable or potential hazards
- Reacts to observed situations of a routine, emergency, or criminal nature
- Renders aid and/or assistance to injured or stranded people, etc.
- Informs immediate supervisors of all unusual hazards and/or activities and occurrences
- Communicates with supervisory personnel about the status of investigations and activities
- Performs crowd and traffic control duties
- Conducts preliminary surveillance of suspected criminal activity
- Performs crowd and traffic control duties
- Attends daily shift briefings as required
- Secures crime scenes
- Attends in-service and other designated training classes
- Maintains uniform and equipment to specific standards
- Performs any other related duty as required
QUALIFICATIONS TO APPLY
To qualify to apply for the position of certified Police Officer in the Town of Lake Clarke Shores, you must meet these minimum qualifications:
- Be a U.S. Citizen
- Be at least 19 years of age
- Have a high school diploma or G.E.D.
- Possess and maintains a valid Florida Driver’s License
- Have a State of Florida Police Officer certification or successfully complete the Florida Police Officer's Certification Exam by date of hire
- Not having any convictions as an adult of a felony or misdemeanor involving perjury, false statement, or domestic violence
- Have not been dishonorably discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces
ELIGIBILITY FOR INTERVIEW
To be considered for a virtual interview with staff from the Police Department and Human Resources Department, applicants must submit the Town Employment Application, the Police Department Part I Employment Application, their resume and a letter of interest. They must also meet the minimum qualifications above.
After the virtual interview, applicants will then be selected based on their qualifications relative to other applicants in the selection pool and will be asked to complete and submit the Police Department Part II Employment Application. A preliminary background check will then be performed including ATMS, driver’s license and criminal history checks. The selected applicants will move on to an in-person interview. Applicants who are not selected will be notified and will not be considered further.
The in-person interview consists of job-related questions and applicants are evaluated based on their responses. Applicants will also take a written exercise. The panel will then provide names of the best qualified applicants to the Chief of Police for consideration. The Chief of Police will select the applicants who are to receive a conditional offer of employment based on the number of positions available.
Applicants who successfully complete the initial interview process, but who do not receive an immediate conditional offer of employment, may be contacted at a later date if positions become available during the valid period of their application.
BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION
The selected applicants must successfully pass all components of the background investigation, which includes:
- Psychological exam
- A polygraph or computerized voice stress analysis (CVSA), truth verification examination
- Drug screening
- Criminal history check
- Driving record check
- Fingerprint check
- Employment, education, training, military, and personal reference checks
- Medical exam
- Credit check
- Verification of Citizenship
- Verification of other information provided by the applicant or discovered during the background investigation
PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMINATION
The psychological examination will be arranged by the Police Department and conducted by a licensed professional. The examination is designed to screen applicants for emotional stability, maturity, and ability to function under stressful conditions.
POLYGRAPH/CVSA TRUTH VERIFICATION EXAMINATION
The following is a list of areas which may be covered when conducting the Polygraph/CVSA. Responses will be kept confidential and maintained in the Police Department.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION
The medical examination will be scheduled by the Police Department and will be conducted by the Town’s approved physician, to include:
- Sufficient physical strength, ability, and freedom of movement necessary, as determined by the Town’s medical representative
- Weight must be in proportion to height, as determined by the Town’s medical representative
- Must meet minimum standards for binocular and monocular vision, color vision, and hearing, as determined by the Town’s medical representative
Applicants who successfully complete all phases of the hiring process will then receive a final offer of employment and meet with the Chief of Police.
