What are the responsibilities and job description for the Police Sergeant position at Town of Kennebunk?
The Town of Kennebunk has an immediate need for a full-time Police Sergeant with the Kennebunk Police Department (KPD).
The Police Sergeant is the first level of supervision in the operations of KPD. The primary responsibility is supervising and leading police officers in the proper performance of police duties in accordance with state laws and KPD standard operating procedures from the officers assigned to their team.
Position Requirements
- Have served at least five (5) years as a full-time police officer.
- Graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy or have received a waiver from said Academy.
- Possess a valid Intermediate Certificate as outlined by the MCJA.
- Must not have any formal discipline resulting in a suspension in their personnel file in the 12 months preceding the date of the promotional announcement and/or be on a performance improvement plan.
- Must not have 3 or more “below standard” ratings in their most recent performance evaluation when applicable.
Hours & Schedule
Police Sergeants work a varied schedule of 4 days/week, 10 hours/shift, with 3 days off per work period.
Pay & Benefits
Police Sergeants are hourly, non-exempt, union positions and KPD offers full-time certified law enforcement officers from Maine and beyond lateral starting pay and vacation commensurate with years of police service. The base pay range is $41.81/hour - $48.47/hour. Officers also have opportunities for overtime. See the union contract for additional available stipends, shift differentials and incentives.

A. Time in Police Service/Experience
B. Formal Education (degree earned)
C. Training and/or Additional Duties/Certifications:
Specialized law enforcement duties such as Field Training Officer Evidence Technician, Drug Recognition Expert, Crash Reconstructionist, Firearms Instructor, Methods of Instruction certificate, or other specialized law enforcement duties requiring skill and training.
D. Community Engagement
