POSITION SUMMARY:
This position performs administrative work associated with the operation of the Tax Collector’s Office. Must be a resident of the Town of Hampton.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the direct supervision of the Tax Collector who outlines departmental policy, makes work assignments, and evaluates work. Performs duties with a high degree of independence, exercising judgment and excellent customer relations skills in answering inquiries. Must be able to perform the duties of the Tax Collector in their absence.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Receive Tax and Lien Payments, including figuring the interest as required.
2. Post daily work in computer
3. Cash out and Balance day's receipts, prepare bank deposit
4. Give accurate information to attorneys, bankers, realtors, closing agencies, etc. who call the office concerning tax status of properties and amounts needed to bring taxes current.
5. Prepare weekly report to the Treasurer.
6. Type Tax Lien Redemptions for recording at Registry
7. At Tax Time - Check warrant list given by the Selectmen for accuracy of tax amount and number of bills. Count printed bills and prepare for mailing by separating computer run-offs and sorting by zip code.
8. Fill Mortgagee requests for duplicate bills or tax amounts.
9. Do periodic audits of all accounts.
10. Help to prepare various notices such as "Barrington Letters", Delinquent Notices, Lien Notices, and Notices to Mortgagees.
11. Post abatements and determine interest due on refunds.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
1. Ability to effectively communicate in person, via telecommunications, and in written form to produce various letters and reports as needed.
2. Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; office management experience; customer service skills and a high level of comfort working with the public.
3. Strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
4. Ability to communicate easily and appropriately with Town staff, officials and members of the public
5. Ability to work with multiple deadlines and other timeline constraints.
6. Should have (or soon acquire) a basic knowledge of the State Statutes regarding tax collection.
7. Should have a strong familiarity with the Town of Hampton’s streets and subdivisions.
8. Ability to effectively manage the Tax Collector’s Office in the absence of the Tax Collector.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of an associate’s degree (Bachelor’s Degree preferred) in an administrative, business, accounting, or related field, plus two years progressively responsible administrative experience. Experience with municipal operations is preferred; or any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
PHYSICAL EXERTION/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Minimal physical effort is generally required in performing administrative office duties. Position requires the ability to operate a keyboard and standard office equipment. Occasionally required to lift equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. The employee is frequently required to use hands for gross motor, fine motor, and dexterity to grasp or utilize office equipment and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to sit, talk, and hear. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
