Job Summary
The Town of Hadley is seeking a motivated and dependable Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator to assist in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Town's wastewater treatment facility and collection system. Working under the direction of the DPW Director, this position is responsible for monitoring treatment processes, operating and maintaining plant equipment and pump stations, collecting and analyzing wastewater samples, performing preventive maintenance, maintaining accurate operational records, and ensuring compliance with state and federal environmental regulations. The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical aptitude, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. This position includes participation in an on-call rotation and emergency response to support the continuous operation of the Town's wastewater treatment facilities.
Job Responsibilities
- Participates in the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant, collection system and surrounding grounds to ensure safe and operationally efficient status in accordance with state and federal regulatory requirements.
- Assists in the preventative maintenance and repair of department vehicles, plant facility and department equipment in clean and safe operating condition; duties include but are not limited to lubricating bearings, changing filters, testing, repacking and cleaning equipment in accordance with department and/or manufacturer’s guidelines.
- Conducts daily inspections and monitors the daily operation of the treatment facility and pump stations; performs all operations in accordance with the department’s daily log check list; assists in the operation of the sludge-wasting equipment.
- Conducts regular collection and analysis of wastewater samples and conducts laboratory analyses including temperature, chlorine residual, dissolved oxygen concentration and pH of raw sewage and plant effluent, as applicable.
- Checks the operation of all plant and pump station equipment; performs routine operational and janitorial duties.
- Attends training sessions and seminars as required to keep abreast of updates or changes in occupational safety and wastewater treatment requirements and to maintain required certifications and/or licenses.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience: Must have a minimum of an associate degree, or an equivalent journeyman's level of trade knowledge, one to three (1-3) years prior work experience, preferably in municipal wastewater distribution and treatment systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements: A candidate for this position must have the ability to obtain a Grade 3 wastewater operator's license, Grade 4 preferred. Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver’s License, 2A Hoisting, Tanker Endorsement, and Air Brake Endorsement. As a condition of employment, the employee must pass a pre-employment physical examination and maintain physical condition to carry out the essential functions of the position in a safe and efficient manner.
