Assistant Road Agent

Reports to: Road Agent

Non-Exempt

Position Purpose:

Performs administrative, technical, and operational work in assisting the Road Agent with the daily operations of the Highway Department. Duties include maintaining town roads and infrastructure, operating and maintaining equipment, and performing related skilled and unskilled tasks. Serves as Road Agent in their absence.

Essential Functions:

· Performs construction, maintenance, drainage, and repair of town highways, bridges, public areas, and cemeteries.

· Operates, maintains, and repairs highway department equipment (trucks with plows/wings, grader, backhoe, bulldozer, sweeper, compactor, etc.).

· Checks roads frequently for changing conditions; plows and sands during winter storms; clears debris from ditches and culverts.

· Repairs roads affected by mud season; grades, rakes, and spreads gravel; replaces culverts; cuts brush and trees; performs roadside mowing.

· Prepares roads for paving and ensures compliance with best practices and safety standards.

· Performs general maintenance of public works areas and related equipment.

· Performs other duties as assigned by the Road Agent and as situations dictate.

· Must be available 24/7 for winter road emergencies and as needed throughout the year.

· Must be able to report to the Highway Department within 30 minutes when called for emergencies, winter storm operations, or other urgent situations.

Other Duties:

· Performs similar or related duties as required.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

· High school diploma or equivalent;

· Minimum of two (2) years of experience in road construction and site work and the operation of highway department equipment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Valid CDL Class B or better license with airbrake endorsement; subject to random DOT drug/alcohol screenings.

Knowledge:

· Strong understanding of public works construction, materials, methods, safety practices, and engineering codes.

· Knowledge of work hazards, safety precautions, and traffic laws related to equipment operation.

Skills:

· Proficiency with a wide range of public works equipment, hand tools, and power tools.

Abilities:

· Ability to operate heavy equipment safely and effectively

· Ability to read construction plans, blueprints, maps, and technical documents.

· Ability to work independently, exercise judgment, and maintain good public relations.

· Ability to perform physical tasks, including bending, lifting, carrying, and working in adverse weather and hazardous road conditions.

· Frequently lifts and/or moves objects up to 50 pounds; heavier loads with mechanical aids

· Walks, stands, climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, and crawls

· Traverses uneven terrain and accesses all areas of the facility

· Operates tools and heavy equipment

· Vision and hearing correctable to normal ranges

Supervision:

Supervision Scope:
Performs duties requiring moderate judgment, initiative, and responsibility in the execution of department operations.

Supervision Received:
Works under the direction of the Road Agent, following Town policies and regulations.

Supervision Given:
Supervises all part-time workers and contractors.

Job Environment:

· Work is primarily performed outdoors in all weather conditions

· Exposure to loud noise, heavy equipment, and hazardous materials (e.g., oil, gas, antifreeze, batteries)

· Regular use of hand tools, power tools, and heavy machinery

· Frequent interaction with the public, Town officials, vendors, and regulatory agencies

· Errors may result in operational delays, equipment damage, injury, or legal consequences

Work Schedule:

This position works a regular schedule Monday through Thursday, 10-hour days. The Assistant Road Agent is expected to be present during critical times and may be required to adjust hours in response to seasonal demands, staffing needs, and operational requirements.

The position also requires overtime, emergency response, and availability outside normal operating hours to address urgent issues, equipment failures, or weather-related events.

Pay: $32.00 - $45.00 per hour
