The Gibsonville Public Library is seeking someone to help us serve our growing, diverse community. Our library is dedicated to finding new and innovative paths toward our vision of “Growing Together” in Gibsonville, which means we need people who are passionate about engaging and working with all members of our community.

The ideal candidate for this position wants to be an active part of an organization that affects positive changes in our community and will help support a public space that is welcoming to diverse populations. As with all positions in our small-town library, this role is responsible for both behind-the-scenes tasks and front-line public service. We are looking for a high-energy individual who is excited about being involved in the library’s daily operations and is eager to share their enthusiasm through community-facing events and activities. The person in this role should have a high level of technological fluency which will enable them to confidently navigate new systems and guide library visitors in the use of unfamiliar digital tools.

This position will have a regular schedule of weekday hours which includes a six-hour shift (9:00am-3:00pm) every other Saturday, as well as some hours spent facilitating events both inside the library and at community locations. Total scheduled hours will average 19 weekly, performed under the supervision of the Library Supervisor.

Starting salary is $18.22/hr with the potential for a 5% increase after 6 months of satisfactory performance. Must have a valid NCDL.

General Statement of Duties

An employee in this class provides library services to the community.? They assist library customers with locating and checking out materials and resources from the library collection, using computers and other technology, and general information requests.? They help to plan and facilitate library programs and process materials for resource sharing. Most of the work is performed inside the library, with some time spent conducting outdoor programs.?

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class performs non-professional clerical work and provides customer service in the town library.? The major responsibilities include managing the NC Cardinal system for the Library as well as providing customer service in person, over the phone, and online via email and messaging tools, working at the service desk to complete library transactions, and assisting patrons in locating materials and using library services.? Involves work in specialty areas such as resource sharing, library activities, community engagement, digital resources, and children's services. ?Independent judgment is required in carrying out daily work assignments. Employee must exhibit fluency with computers and internet resources.? Work is performed in partnership with the Library Services Specialist and under the regular supervision of the Library Supervisor.??

  • Provides excellent customer service in order to create an environment that leads to positive user experiences and that is welcoming and inclusive to all.?
  • Works with Library Services Specialist to plan and facilitate library programs such as library card drives, book clubs, or after school activities.?
  • Prepares shared resources for shipping to partner libraries in the NC Cardinal system.?
  • Aids patrons in the selection of library books and other specialized library materials; serves as a resource for patron's questions.?
  • Performs duties at the circulation desk, including checking library books in and out, taking patron requests and renewing materials.?
  • Registers new library patrons, reviews and verifies eligibility and application information, records patron in computer record, explains library policies and issues a library card.?
  • Acts as receptionist for the library, answers phone and greets patrons.?
  • Shelves books in the proper location; straightens and checks books to see that they are correctly shelved.?
  • Represents the library at community events such as farmer’s markets, festivals, and other outreach activities.?
  • Assists in the closing of the facility by preparing it for the next day’s use, turning equipment off, shelves loose books, and securing the building.?
  • Aids patrons in the use of public computers, troubleshooting issues with installed programs and internet services and content.?

  • Ability to ride the book bike to various locations in town and to pack and unpack the bike’s contents to set up a “pop-up library” experience.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands of Work

This can be a physically demanding position. An employee in this class must be able to lift, pull and push library materials including shipments of books up to 100 lbs constantly.. They must be able to pick up and move chairs, folding tables, and other program materials and maneuver loaded book carts weighing approximately up to (100) pounds constantly. They must be able to pedal a cargo bike weighing up to 100 lbs occasionally and ride it with the aid of an electric assist motor to event locations. An employee must be able to physically perform the basic life functions of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, talking, hearing, and repeating motions.? An employee must possess visual acuity to operate a computer terminal and to read extensively.?

Education and Experience

Graduation from high school and some basic work experience sufficient to meet the knowledge, skills and abilities required or an equivalent combination of education and experience.?
