The Town of Falmouth welcomes applications for a Water Utilities Crew Leader position with the Department of Public Works (DPW) Water Division’s Water Distribution Team. This is a stable, full-time, year-round, benefited supervisory position that works 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with substantial overtime opportunities. Overtime worked between the hours of midnight and 7 a.m. is compensated at double-time.

This position participates in a rotating on-call schedule and is subject to emergency call-back to respond to water system emergencies, utility failures, weather events, and other public works emergencies. During on-call weeks, this position receives an additional 21 hours of straight-time pay as on-call compensation in addition to overtime pay for any call-outs.

The Town supports and covers the cost of additional licensing and training, and advancement opportunities are available within the Water Division and other divisions of the DPW.

Under the general direction of the Water Utilities Supervisor and the Assistant Water Utilities Supervisor, this position exercises considerable independent judgment in supervising crews and performing essential functions that include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervising and directing field crews performing construction, maintenance, repair, and servicing of water mains, extensions, valves, hydrants, and connections;
  • Assigning work, providing training and guidance, and promoting safe work practices;
  • Supervising road repairs and asphalt patching;
  • Serving as the Assistant Water Utilities Supervisor during their absence;
  • Operating backhoes, front loaders, and other heavy equipment;
  • Using specialized utility equipment including tapping machines, air compressors, jackhammers, and propane torches;
  • Performing manual work in digging and back-filling excavations;
  • Handling and transporting heavy materials;
  • Sketching diagrams of work performed for Division records;
  • Maintaining records of equipment and materials used;
  • Turning water service on and off;
  • Responding to water system maintenance needs; and
  • Performing all other related duties as assigned.

The Water Utilities Crew Leader also supports snow and ice control operations, including plowing, sanding, and de-icing roads, sidewalks, schools, parking areas, and other municipal facilities. This position responds to emergency call-back assignments and assists with emergency repairs and storm response operations as needed.

This is an active, hands-on outdoor position involving moderate to heavy physical work performed in a variety of weather and environmental conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, coastal conditions, construction sites, and other potentially hazardous public works environments. May perform work in confined spaces and, following appropriate training, serve as a confined space attendant.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in public works construction and maintenance activities involving the operation of heavy and specialized equipment, including a minimum of one (1) year in water and/or sewer operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, or experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

Must be able to pass a pre-employment CORI background check, physical, and drug screening test. Must have a thorough knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, and techniques used in the construction and maintenance of municipal water systems.

The successful candidate demonstrates sound judgment, effectively leads and motivates employees, and is committed to providing safe, reliable public water service. The successful candidate is also dependable, safety-conscious, hardworking, and able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Candidates must be able to operate equipment safely and effectively, lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, safely perform physically demanding work throughout the workday, and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers and the public.

Required Licenses:

  • Massachusetts Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake Endorsement;
  • Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer License with Restriction 2-A; and
  • OSHA-10 Certification (or ability to obtain within 180 days of hire)

Candidates who otherwise satisfy the minimum qualifications for the position but do not currently possess the required CDL-A or Hoisting License may be eligible to obtain these licenses through the Town's in-house training program, with training costs covered by the Town.

Anticipated Starting Hourly Rate: Step 1 ($30.33/hour) - Step 3 ($32.80/hour)*, commensurate with qualifications and experience, with eligibility for annual advancement along the 9-step pay scale. Overtime opportunities available, including double-time pay for overtime worked between midnight and 7:00 a.m. *Rates effective the first full pay period of July 2026 for FY27.
