Town of Falmouth, MA
Falmouth, MA Full Time
POSTED ON 10/8/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 1/31/2027

The Town of Falmouth welcomes applications from retired full-time sworn police officers who retired in good standing to serve as Traffic Control Officials for the Falmouth Police Department. These non-sworn public-safety positions provide safe traffic control at assigned details throughout the Town when no current full-time or reserve Police Officer is available.

Traffic Control Officials are non-union, at-will employees appointed by the Town Manager for one-year terms and work on a per diem, as-needed basis. Hours and assignments are not guaranteed. Traffic Control Officials must, however, be available to assist the Police Department during:

  • The Falmouth Road Race;
  • Either the Cape Cod Half Marathon or the Cape Cod Marathon; and
  • At least three of the following events: Breakthrough T1D Ride – Cape Cod, the Falmouth Fireworks Display, the Falmouth Street Fair, and the Falmouth Sprint Triathlon.

Under the direction of the Chief of Police or their designee and the on-duty Shift Supervisor or Officer in Charge, responsibilities include:

  • Directing and controlling vehicle and pedestrian traffic at assigned locations;
  • Operating traffic signal controls and placing traffic cones and barricades to establish safe traffic patterns;
  • Monitoring changing traffic and work-zone conditions and immediately reporting hazards or unsafe situations to the Shift Supervisor or Officer in Charge;
  • Providing courteous assistance to the public, including directions and information about streets and points of interest; and
  • Maintaining effective radio communication, following supervisory instructions, and performing assignments in a competent, timely, and professional manner.

Traffic Control Officials are not sworn police officers pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 41, Section 98. Their authority is limited to directing, controlling, and regulating traffic while in uniform and performing an assignment authorized by the Police Department. They have no authority to issue citations, effect seizures, serve warrants, make arrests, or perform other functions of a sworn police officer except as expressly authorized by Police Department policy.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Candidates must be retired full-time sworn police officers who retired in good standing from a municipal, county, or state law enforcement agency.

A valid Massachusetts Class D motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Successful candidates must pass a comprehensive background investigation, including a Massachusetts Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) background check and fingerprint-based Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) unescorted-access clearance.

Traffic Control Officials may be required to complete an initial traffic-control safety course. Annual in-service training will be required as directed by the Chief of Police. Annual First Aid & CPR training is required. Candidates must have knowledge of hand traffic signals, cone and traffic patterns, manual traffic-signal operation, and Falmouth’s geography, streets, and businesses. Candidates must be able to stand for extended periods, remain alert around moving traffic, work outdoors in varied weather and lighting conditions, and place traffic cones and barricades.

Hourly Rate: Details are compensated at $80.00 per hour, with a four-hour minimum. Non-detail work, including required training, will be compensated at $37.11 per hour.

How to Apply: The positions will remain open until filled. Applications will be reviewed as received, and the posting will be closed and taken down once all positions have been filled.
