What are the responsibilities and job description for the TEMPORARY MES MAINTENANCE WORKER position at Town of Falmouth, MA?
The Town of Falmouth has an immediate need for a skilled and motivated individual to join the Marine & Environmental Services (MES) Department as a Temporary Maintenance Worker for a three (3)-month term. This hands-on role supports the maintenance and operation of Falmouth’s harbors, waterfront facilities, and environmental infrastructure while working alongside MES staff at the award-winning Falmouth Town Marina, a Boaters’ Choice “Elite Fleet” marina in historic downtown Falmouth. The marina features more than 100 slips and is located just minutes from Woods Hole and Martha’s Vineyard, serving as a hub for recreational and visiting boaters.
This temporary, non-benefited position is scheduled for 22.5 hours per week, with a flexible schedule between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required to support operational needs.
Under the direction of the Deputy MES Director, the Temporary Maintenance Worker performs skilled manual work related to the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of MES facilities, equipment, and infrastructure. Responsibilities include:
- Maintaining and repairing docks, boat ramps, floats, moorings, navigation aids, and other waterfront infrastructure;
- Supporting the maintenance of herring runs, upwellers, trails, signage, and MES buildings and structures;
- Performing preventative maintenance on MES vehicles, vessels, and equipment;
- Performing electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and general repair work;
- Conducting mechanical and small engine repairs;
- Operating Town vehicles, light trucks, and a variety of hand and power tools;
- Performing welding and fabrication work as needed;
- Assisting with custodial maintenance of MES facilities when required; and
- Performing other related work as needed to support departmental operations.
This position also supports broader MES operations as needed, including:
- Assisting the Senior Animal Control Officer, Animal Control Officer, and Police Department with animal-related calls, including deer-strike removal;
- Serving as an Assistant Harbormaster and/or Deputy Shellfish Warden with associated operational and enforcement support; and
- Assisting the Beach Division with the installation and removal of seasonal swim area buoys.
This is a hands-on, field-based position with work performed primarily outdoors, on the water, and at waterfront facilities. The role involves physical labor in varying weather conditions and frequent interaction with the public and other Town staff.
Minimum Qualifications: Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of two (2) years of general maintenance experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
Must have a valid class D license and the ability to operate a motor vehicle. Knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, and electrical systems is preferred. The successful candidate must also have the ability to obtain a Lift Truck Certification and complete the rabies vaccination series.
Hourly Rate: Flat rate of $24.81/hour. This is a temporary, non-benefit-eligible position.
