What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintainer I Highway position at Town of Fairfield?

This classification is accountable for performing a certain level of skilled manual work in the Streets & Highways Division of Public Works. Work includes road construction work under the supervision of the Streets and Highways Supervisor and in accordance with standard practices, codes and skills, and OSHA-required safety protocols.

  • Employee will be required to drive, load or unload designated trucks with trailers and/or attachments (such as skid steers)
  • Prepares truck or equipment for operation by performing routine safety check before and after operating equipment
  • Performs maintenance and cleaning of designated equipment; gathering of tools, equipment, materials and supplies
  • Performs general carpentry, maintenance, mechanical, construction, painting, and/or tree grounds work
  • Performs semi- and skilled trades work
  • Performs other related duties as requested, including those of lower classifications
  • Must be willing to accept assignment to overtime for emergency duties including snow and ice removal as required, including evenings, weekends and holidays
  • May be assigned on the job training under the supervision of a higher classified employee


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES


  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to utilize standard tools, materials, methods and practices of manual work in a specific line of work, including operating equipment and machinery
  • Ability to perform heavy manual work for extended periods, sometimes under unfavorable or extreme weather conditions including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling; may also require lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of materials
  • Some knowledge of trades work
  • Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions and directives
  • Ability to read and write
  • Ability to understand and adhere to safety protocols
  • Ability to acquire skills to operate increasingly complex equipment through on the job and/or external training
  • Ability to perform in a courteous and professional manner amongst staff and the public on a daily basis
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and superiors
  • Operate different truck sizes; may operate CDL Trucks & Stump Grinder, motorized tools, and motorized equipment
  • May be required to spread, rake and compact asphalt/cold patch
  • May be required to use a chainsaw and wood chipper; create and install signage
  • May be required to use a sweeper, roadside flail mower, 
  • Graduation from High School or GED or any combination of experience and training which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above
  • In order to advance within the job series, at least 2 years of experience in the prior lower-level Maintainer position is required, with any combination of construction work, road work, building maintenance and custodial work, grounds maintenance work, and driving
  • Possess a valid Connecticut Driver’s License and a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement (Class A for Maintainer V)
