Job Summary: In a major town department this class is established as a structured internship program designed to prepare undergraduate and graduate college students for professional careers in administration, managerial and technical occupations by alternating periods of academic study and practical work experience in their chosen discipline. The Finance Intern will be exposed to financial transaction processing in a variety of areas, monthly financial reporting, review and reconciliation of general ledger accounts and other general finance functions.
Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of an administrative official who reviews the progress of the program and the direct supervision of an employee designated by the administrator who reviews and rates work performance.

Examples of Essential Duties:
- Responsible for screening and distributing mail and packages for the department.
- Manages and maintains the department’s record management system including filing and retrieving documents, following records retention schedules and resolves record keeping errors.
- Inputs financial transactions into accounting software and ensures accurate and timely data entry for all financial records.
- Provides general administrative support to finance team members, including filing, digitizing, and duplicating documents, scheduling meetings and handling correspondence.
- Completes independent assignments as necessary and as assigned by finance staff.
- Receives practical training in application of theories and concepts relevant to work of employing department or program.
- Performs ad-hoc projects, special assignments, and other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of computer software including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications and standard office equipment consistent for this position.
- Knowledge of principles, theories and concepts of appropriate discipline and ability to apply them in practical situations.
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Minimum Qualifications: Current matriculation in an accredited Associate’s, Bachelor’s or advanced degree program determined by the Director of Human Resources or designee to be appropriate preparation for employment in the designated town department and/or functional area.
Appointment: Permanent status cannot be attained while working in this classification. This class cannot be used to circumvent employment status or benefit eligibility. Incumbents may not work more than six (6) months, the equivalent of 1040 hours, per twelve (12) calendar months. Positions in this class will be used for training purposes. Students are required to submit to the town’s Human Resources Department a letter of verification obtained from the Office of the Registrar attesting to the student's current educational status. Students working in this class may or may not be affiliated with a cooperative education program.
