Part Time Assistant Regional Animal Control Officer

PART TIME ASSISTANT REGIONAL ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER

The Town of Essex is currently accepting applications for a part-time Assistant Regional Animal Control Officer. This is a Special Statutory Appointment. The annual stipend for this position is $17,000 to start and will increase to $18,000 upon completion of the State Animal Control Officer Program. This position is not eligible for benefits under the current Town policy.

The hours of coverage necessary are 16 hours a week. The 16 hours will consist of two 8-hour shifts to be determined in coordination with the full-time ACO. This position also requires “waiting to be engaged” for emergency calls in order to provide coverage for two overnights in a seven-day period. Additional coverage may be necessary to cover for vacation, sick, and other leave of the full-time ACO.

: Appointed by the First Selectman under State Statute 22-331. Performs patrol and enforcement duties in an animal control program; enforces Town regulations, Connecticut State Dog Statutes, laws relating to cats and the control of rabies in domestic animals. Also to aid with additional substantial investigations as needed.

: Three (3) years of experience in the field of animal control or commercial management of domestic animals or law enforcement involving animals.

: Connecticut law requires all animal control officers to receive mandatory training and will be required to receive a minimum of eighty hours of field-related training. New officers will have up to one year to receive this training. Existing officers require a minimum of six hours of continuing education related to their job duties as animal control officer each calendar year.

: In addition to the drug & alcohol screening and pre-placement physical exam, the checking of references of facts stated in the application and a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for permanent appointment.

: May be exposed to considerable danger of injury from animal bites, exposure to rabid animals and to disagreeable and potentially dangerous conditions in dealing with animals and animal owners while issuing search and seizure and arrest warrants. Must be able to lift and/or carry objects (i.e., large dogs/animals, food bags, etc.) of 25 to 50 pounds. Position requires a valid Connecticut operator’s license. Town vehicle provided for use when on duty.
