Wage Range: $25.63 to $30.15 on an established schedule per union contract40-hour work weekOBJECTIVESUnder the supervision of the Foreman or Crew Chief(s), performs manual and some semiskilled work in the construction, repair and maintenance of Town roads, bridges, storm sewers, grounds, facilities, and wastewater collection system.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSPerforms manual work in the laying of pipe, repair, replacement and cleaning of catch basins, patching or resurfacing roads, and related maintenance tasks, including buildings and grounds.Performs laboring tasks using hand tools such as: shovel, pick and rake as well as power tools.Shovels material such as sand, fill, asphalt, salt, gravel, and cold patch; breaks up asphaltic mixes with jackhammer, mixes and pours cement.Digs trenches, lays pipe, cleans catchment basins and removes brush and debris.Cuts grass and brush by hand or with power equipment, rakes leaves and brush, repairs and installs street signs.Cleans & paints Town buildings as required, performing basic repairs as necessary.Assists in the operation of the Town’s Recycling Center. Drives Town vehicles; operates other equipment as required; loads and unloads trucks.Maintains and makes minor repairs to equipment and reports serious malfunctions to the mechanic(s).Operates required vehicles and equipment to plow snow and treat roads, parking lots and other areas. Shovels snow by hand or uses powered snow removal equipment as assigned.Performs flag person duties when required for road work or other related activities.Performs work following all safety procedures and policies.May be assigned to be on-call as necessary.Performs other related duties as required/assigned.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESBasic knowledge and ability to perform manual work for public works projects related to the construction, repair, and maintenance of Town roads, bridges, grounds, storm sewers, landfill areas, and facilities.Ability to acquire skill to operate equipment, following safety procedures.Ability to work following oral and/or written directions.Ability to perform routine maintenance of equipment and make minor repairs and adjustments, while recognizing deficiencies.Ability to work in poor weather conditions and extreme temperatures.Ability to use and maintain simple tools and light powered equipment.Ability to perform light/heavy physical labor in sometimes uncomfortable positions.Ability to plow snow and perform all snow removal tasks for long periods.Ability to work independently or with others depending on the assignment.REQUIRED EQUIPMENT OPERATIONOperates the following required equipment, including, but not limited to: Town vehicles, light equipment, mower, snowplow, string trimmer, leaf blower, chain saws, small air and electric tools, snow blower, roller/compactor, hedge trimmer, line striper, edger, infield machine, etc.REQUIRED PHYSICAL EFFORTContinuous physical effort required in performing duties, requiring walking and standing and lifting while performing work under varying conditions, including exposure to inclement weather with some disagreeable factors in both situations, such as dust, dirt, grease, heat and cold. Ability to lift and/or carry objects of medium to heavy weight. Considerable highway driving may be required to carry out duties. Some stress involved in public contacts. Plows snow and treats roads for an extended period of time. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum)Graduation from high school or equivalent and preferred (3) months of construction/landscaping or maintenance work, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSMust possess a driver’s license valid in the State of CT..
