GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Utility operators are responsible for inspecting, sampling, maintenance, and repair activities in and on public works facilities, to include Sewer and Water equipment, collection systems and water distribution systems.
DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND EXPECTATIONS:
- Operate heavy equipment, machinery, and specialized equipment used in the operation and maintenance of the sewer and water systems.
- Install, read, test and repair water meters, hydrant testing and maintenance of water distribution apparatuses. Maintain water pumping and storage facilities.
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Assist with major equipment maintenance and repairs as assigned Perform on-call duties as assigned.
- General mechanical, plumbing and electrical repair and diagnosis.
- Reading and comprehending maps, diagrams, and regulations/policies
- City geography and street locations
- Environmental standards and compliance requirements
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, employees, and the public.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
- Work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
- Use safe working practices in the performance of duties. Ensure proper safety practices are used by all operators.
- Perform other related duties as required.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED)
- Two years' experience in utility work or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
REQUIRED LICENSES:
- Must possess a valid Tennessee driver's license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require climbing, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, driving, pushing, pulling, lifting motions, may be required to work overtime, weekends, and holidays; in all weather conditions; under hazardous conditions; on congested roadways, obstructed roads, high structures; around operating equipment; in a noisy environment; with chemicals; and with the physical ability and stamina to perform strenuous physical work most work will be performed outdoors. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, sewer lift stations and water systems repairs, chemicals, workspace restrictions and intense noises. Heavy Work: exerting up to 20 to 50lbs to move objects.
Pay: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour
