Job Overview
The Town of Dedham seeks highly qualified candidates for the position of Human Resources Generalist - Benefits to perform skilled work pertaining to the administration of all benefits offered to employees and retirees. Work includes significant communication with new employees, employees at times of open enrollment and life changes, as well as termination including retirement.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma required, Bachelor’s Degree in human resources or public administration, business management or related field preferred.
- A minimum of three years experience in human resources, benefits administration, accounting and/or business or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Training and experience in municipal highly preferred.
- Must receive an acceptable CORI report.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel), Munis, Outlook, and
- willing to learn new software programs as needed.
- Possess a thorough knowledge of and familiarity with modern office equipment, technology, electronic equipment, and software applications and operations.
- A demonstrated knowledge of general computer skills and online use.
- A high degree of organizational, time management and attention to detail skills.
- Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and handle diverse tasks.
- Ability to understand written procedures, and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team required.
- Ability to take initiative, exercise sound judgment and make decisions within scope of his/her authority.
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
- Skills, including but not limited to bookkeeping, typing, filing and telephone skills.
- High level of professionalism and the ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to relate and communicate in a positive manner and deal tactfully and appropriately with the general public, and town departments and ability to recognize those areas for which inquiries should be referred to a superior.
- Support the overall Human Resources department’s mission, vision, and policies and procedures.
- Ability to organize and maintain detailed and extensive records and prepare statistical and financial reports using Excel and MUNIS.
- Ability to work effectively under time constraints to meet deadlines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of health, life, dental and disability insurance programs.
- Working knowledge of accounting and payroll practices.
- Familiarity with flexible spending, health reimbursement, and health savings accounts.
Essential Functions of the Job
- Responsible for coordination of the Town’s benefit package. Maintains associated records and files. Notifies insurance companies of enrollments and terminations in a timely manner. Checks invoices for accuracy. Assists new hires in completing all necessary benefit-related forms.
- Prepares and sends bills to employees for monthly employee contribution if no longer on payroll. Notifies COBRA administrator of terminations of coverage. Coordinates information with Accounting so that financial records are accurate including payroll deductions.
- Responds to employees’ questions and requests related to insurance and other benefits.
- Resolves benefit issues referring employees to vendors as appropriate.
- Coordinates communication and events in support of Open Enrollment periods.
- Meets with new hires to do all new hire processing and paperwork when necessary. Assists in all other functions of the Human Resources Department whenever possible.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Pay: $76,554.75 - $99,886.57 per year
