What are the responsibilities and job description for the HOUSING MAINTENANCE MECHANIC position at Town of Chapel Hill?

The Town's Housing and Community Development Department includes four divisions: Public Housing, Affordable Housing, Community Connections, and Administration, which work collaboratively to execute the Town Council's affordable housing and equitable community engagement goals. The department is committed to fostering an environment where everyone on the team is empowered to lead and achieve results consistent with the Council's goals and the Department's work plan.
Essential Functions:
- Completes safety inspections and preventative maintenance of public housing units
- Performs general maintenance of public housing units, including plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and appliance repairs as permissible
- Uses a work order system to track and prioritize maintenance requests and document completion.
- Provides notice to residents regarding upcoming work.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands:
- The work requires frequent walking, standing, or stooping, and sitting at a desk or table.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. safely.
- High School Diploma/GED
- Valid NC Driver's License
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a related field OR any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the job
- The operation of a wide range of hand tools and equipment in the electrical, carpentry, HVAC, and plumbing trades
- Practices in Federal, State, and Local building codes and safety regulations preferred
- Manage multiple projects and shifting priorities
- Work independently, as well as effectively as part of a team
- Communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, residents, and other stakeholders
- Serve on the departmental on-call rotation
- Work a flexible schedule, including holidays, weekends, and inclement weather, on an as-needed basis
